Servpro at Freedom Festival SERVPRO doing giveaways at Freedom Festival

The Freedom Festival returned to Vienna this July 2nd-3rd with a Carnival, Car Show, Food Vendors, Concerts, Hot Air Balloon rides, a spectacular Fire Works show and more! It was a hit in our community.

SERVPRO was at a main section of traffic where we had giveaways setup. We gave away custom SERVPRO Freedom Festival T-shirts, Backpacks, hand sanitizer, Balloons, Beachballs, and more!

We were able to have so many great conversations with the people of our community letting them know what we do, and the areas that we service.

We also had a SERVPRO Corn hole setup where people came and played.

It was a great day that we capped off by assisting with the Hot Air Balloon rides located at Spencers Landing that people were able to be shuttled to from out Booth at the Freedom Festival.

Servpro at Hot Air Balloon Rides SERVPRO assisted with the Hot Air Balloon Rides.

At The Freedom Festival in Vienna, SERVPRO sponsored Hot Air Balloon Rides! These Hot Air Balloon rides were located a Spencers Landing. A Shuttle from SERVPRO Station located at Grand Central Mall in Vienna was bringing people back and forth to the Hot Air Balloon Rides.

SERVPRO's team was there to help with the setup of the Hot Air Balloon, as well as providing 3 trucks for the tethering. Our team members also assisted with helping people on and off the Hot Air Balloon.

As the night went on, more people began to show up. The plan was for the Hot Air Balloon to go for 3 hours. But there was a large amount of people in line that would miss a ride. So SERVPRO sponsored a 4th hour and was able to get on almost everyone that was in line.

After the 4th hour, SERVPRO assisted with the tear down and packing up of the Hot Air Balloon Rides. We had a great time and are looking forward to the next time!

Great Crowds at Hot Air Balloon Rides A large amount of people came out to ride the Hot Air Balloon!

We saw an incredible turn out at Spencers Landing for the Hot Air Balloon Rides that were a part of the Freedom Festival located at Grand Central Mall in Vienna.

As our team was assisting with the setup of the Hot Air Balloon, we were amazed at the amount of people who were showing up. By the first hour, the entire parking lot was full and there were two lines formed almost to the back of the parking lot and into the grass!

As the night went on, SERVPRO sponsored a fourth hour. We saw that the crowd was becoming too big to fit within 3 hours. So we were able to get as many people as possible from the large crowd onto the Hot Air Balloon!

3 Tips on Avoiding Water Damage to Your Home

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Bursted pipe Pipe bursting from damage.

Here are three ways to avoid getting water damage in your home.

Tip #1: Clean gutters and downspouts.

Clean your gutters at least twice a year to avoid blockage. Sometimes you may need to clean more frequently.

Tip #2: Know Where Your Water Main is.

Plumbing experts say that the water main shutoff may be the most important plumbing feature in the entire house. So understanding where it is incase of emergency will help you in a situation where you need to shut it off.

Tip #3: Investigate & Fix leaks promptly.

If you see a leak, or evidence of a leak, do not wait to investigate it. Waiting could lead to much bigger problems down the road. You will want to make sure you fix it promptly.

Items That Need Thrown Away After Fire Damage

Items To Throw Away After a Fire

Recovering from a home fire is a long, frustrating process. When you face the destruction of the furnishings and cherished items of your West Virginia home, it can be hard to say goodbye to belongings that don't seem to have been affected. However, there are some items that need to be thrown away, even if they don't look like they've been damaged by fire or smoke.

1. Food

You’ll need to toss out anything that was laying on the counter. (Bread, cereal, etc)  Of course, you'll throw away anything in open containers and foods there were stored in cardboard or thin plastic bags. It may surprise you to learn, however, that even your canned foods should be tossed out. This is because the high heat of the fire will activate the growth of bacteria, even when food is sealed in glass jars and cans from the store.

The items in your fridge may be safe, even if the power has gone out, but remember that it's always safer to throw out questionable foods than to suffer through physical sickness. Anything that smells smoky or odd has visible soot, or doesn't feel cold should be tossed.

2. Medicine

The last thing you need after a fire is to be left without the medications that you need. But these items can be affected by fire damage. If there's charring, or signs of soot or warping go ahead and throw it out. It's better to contact your doctor for refills than to become sick or suffer any other side effects.

3. Cosmetics

Inspect your cosmetics that were near high heat for soot, dust, chemicals, and signs of damage. If anything is warped due to the exposure to heat, toss it. Stay on the safe side and simply get rid of all medicine and cosmetic items.

4. Clothes

Some of your clothes might be able to be cleaned and disinfected by a fire restoration company that has the proper tools and knowledge and experience. Anything that is burnt needs to be thrown away. Baby and children's clothing need some extra care and attention as you don’t want to risk your little one’s health.

Always use caution with the above items after a fire. It might be smart to just throw away food, medicine and cosmetics, and some clothes for the sake of your health. Always keep in mind that items exposed to high heat could affect your health if you keep them. If you’re questioning anything after fire damage, feel free to give us a call here at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties. We are always happy to help.

Maintaining your Smoke Detectors

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke Detectors are incredible devices, and they are designed to help keep you and your family are safe. That being said, it is extremely important that your alarms are correctly installed and are tested on a regular basis. Making sure your alarms are installed correctly is vital. But even beyond installation, you will want to be sure that you are maintaining your alarms. Depending on the detectors that you choose, the maintenance can differ.

1. Nine-Volt Battery Powered Detectors

As an affordable smoke detector, nine-volt powered detectors require monthly inspections and tests, you should make sure that the alarm is clean and doesn’t have any debris on it, by pressing the test button, that will allow you to test the alarm. You should also replace the batteries annually to be sure the alarm is functioning correctly. It’s also recommended that every 10 years you replace the alarms.

2. Long-Life Alarms

These smoke detectors require a 10-year lithium battery. As these batteries should not need to be replaced, it is recommended that the entire unit be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions. But, you should still test the alarm and make sure it is free of debris at least once a month.

3. Hardwired Fire Signals

Hardwired fire signals are wired directly into your home's electrical system, which adds a sense of security because the units communicate with each other, sounding alarms throughout the home. This type of alarm is replaced every 10 years and tested monthly. The battery backup should be also replaced every year.

A smoke detector can provide reassurance because it will alert you and therefore protect you and your home. However, depending on the type of alarm, each detector requires a certain amount of upkeep to maintain its intended performance.

3 Storm Damage Issues that Could Close your Business Indefinitely

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

When storms hit the Parkersburg, WV there can be major issues that can cause indefinite shut downs.

Here are 3 major ways that the damage affected these businesses and this article will equip you with how to keep afloat.

Losing Your Data

Water and storm damage can wipe all your information clean. From electrical corrosion to all out computer failure those vital documents can be forever lost, closing down your business due to the unbearable costs.

    1. How to avoid this problem: Back it up! External hard-drives are extremely cheap these days. Set a weekly practice of backing up your computers and tablets. It’s frustrating, but think of it as very cheap insurance. Some companies like Apple even offer “Cloud” back ups which are automatically done on regular intervals.
    2. What if you didn’t do this? There are multiple methods of restoration that you can investigate. There are companies that help recover damaged hard-drives in computers and tablets. It’s very important that you do not turn on the device. This may create a shortage and burn the storage. This will make it impossible to recover.

Ruined Documentation:

If you keep paper documentation it is important that you do not move the paper once wet. This can rip the sheets apart or even further smudge or leak the ink.

    1. How to Avoid This Problem? Digitizing your paperwork is priority. Make it habitual and mandatory. Get one of your assistants or staff to do this daily, if not at least every 48 hours. This can be done easily by scanning to the computer.
    2. What if I didn’t do this? The best option is to use sublimation. To find out more on this click here.

Damaged Work Place.

This is the most obvious but there are a few very important things to take into account: the foundations (floors, walls doors etc) and furniture (chairs, tables etc).

    1. How to Avoid This Problem? If possible evaluate the drainage areas of the building and rooms. If your building has some ability to allow water to drain this will significantly minimize the magnitude of damage. Get insurance. This is a non-negotiable for businesses. Whatever you can afford, use it. You don’t need it until you need it. And when you do … you’re always glad you have it.
    2. What If I didn’t do this? Water and storm damage restoration is an expensive endeavor. There are many parts that go into it and a restoration bill can be anywhere between $10,000 to $50,000 or more. This is dependent on the size of the venue, damage and other factors. Please, get insurance. If it’s the one thing you do from all of this.

We hope that this has helped. West Virginia needs all local businesses to stay alive during this time and beyond.

4 Water Issues that Cause Businesses in West Virginia to Lose A lot of Money and HOW TO AVOID them.

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

At a Glance:

  • What to do with Pipe cracks and loose fittings
  • Plumbing back up
  • Fire Safety Sprinkling System
  • Foundation Cracks

Some water restoration jobs caused by these four issues listed below can cost up to $100,000+ in extreme cases. But even with the small cases, they can still cost quite a lot and even cause a lot of closed business.

In this post you will see 4 of the leading causes we’ve seen create dramatic water damage to West Virginian Businesses, as well as a few tips that must be (seriously) considered in order to manage these dangers.

Danger 1: Pipes (cracks & loose fittings)

There are two points within this one that must be addressed. These issues happen over time and it is regularly over looked or even ignored by businesses.

Unfortunately the longer the problem is overlooked the bigger the damage potential grows. For example there may be multiple points that can burst at once, creating a wider diameter of damage to your office or building (making it even more costly to remedy).

Very cheap suggestion: Does your business have a routine, building-wide pipe check? If no, then arrange for that. Even doing this once per year will dramatically decrease the risk to your business and it is not going to blow the bank.

What would you rather do? Pay $1,000 a year for 10 years to check? Or $50,000-$100,000 in damages?

Danger 2: Plumbing Backup

This is the most common issue we are called in for. A backed up sink pipe is one thing, and a backed up toilet is uncomfortable for even the strongest of stomachs in your workplace.

Tips to avoid this issue: Stay away from anything that solidifies in pipes. Obvious things include plaster or grease, but lesser known items include cooking oils. Cooking oils build up over time and solidify in pipes. If possible allow oils to cool and then dispose in a trash disposal. Or if time is sensitive, run hot water simultaneously down the drain with the oils and continue for 30 seconds after.

Danger 3: Fire Safety Sprinkling System

One of the most expensive issues to go wild in your business. A faulty water system will damage everything in your business and cover the most ground possible.

A simple faulty trip of the fire safety may result in the entire system being initiated, possibly damaging all computers, desks, carpets and walls.

Damage from this example can be financially crippling to most businesses, from restoration of the foundations, to refitting the entire business and replacing all equipment. Not to mention any lost data to the business from computing damages.

Tips to avoid this issue: Have regular safety inspections for your fire safety systems. Do you do this now? How often do you do it? Suggestions range from every 3-6 months. The more frequent, the safer you will be.

Danger 4: Foundation Cracks

While yes, this is often a landlord responsibility to keep on top of, can you financially afford for water flooding? Time where your business is closed due to restoration and/or rebuilding? If no, make sure to follow these actions:

Tips for avoid this issue: Speak with your landlord and have an agreement (in writing) that they will conduct routine foundation checks (at least every 6 or 12 months) to check thoroughly for foundation weaknesses including cracks or holes. If they don’t want to do this, explain the expensive risk they are taking.

Tips for Keeping Your Business Free of Mold in West Virginia

2/2/2022 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • 3 ways mold can damage your business
  • How to save thousands on mold removal & restoration

Have you ever considered the value of your business in your warehouse or office alone? Would you know how to remove mold and save thousands in restoration?

We don’t tend to consider the financial damage a mold outbreak would have on our business. Fortunately, we have a few tips to help you save your business thousands.

3 Ways Mold can Damage your Business

  1. Damage to purchasable goods - In most small and large businesses, stock is stored before sale. If mold began to grow on these items, they would no longer be in a saleable condition. Replacing damaged goods could cost you hundreds, and even thousands before they’ve even left your business.
  2. Stains & Odors - When mold grows and isn’t removed fast enough, it can leave awful stains on ceilings, walls and other items. , mold can often be smelt as well. Having stains and odors in your place of business will likely turn customers away and in seek of nearby competitors.
  3. Close of business - Mold growth can quickly become hard to control, and pose as a health risk to employees and customers. At this point, your business may have to close for thorough cleaning and removal. Closing a business may result in a huge loss of profits, and even a loss of long-term customers.

3 Simple ways you can save your business before it goes under

  1. Check for moisture - Mold grows in dark and moist parts of our businesses, like basements. It is vitally important to check your business for any residual moisture or leaks from pipes and taps. By checking regularly, you will likely find mold be able to remove it effectively before it grows out of control.
  2. Store your stock in a safe place - If your business holds expensive stock on site, it is important to store them in a safe place. An ideal environment for stock to remain undamaged would be a well circulated room with natural light. Air circulation and light could mean the difference between a year in profit or loss.
  3. Don’t wait for restoration - You can save thousands by treating the problem as soon as you find it. If you do locate mold in your business, be sure to check and move any stock you are storing. Once the expensive items are out of the way, begin cleaning the mold with vinegar and a sponge. If there are any stains leftover, be sure to reach out for professional help to ensure it doesn’t regrow or spread.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

Review from Emily on our Water Damage Services in Parkersburg, WV

1/28/2022 (Permalink)

We love hearing incredibly positive reviews and we received this review on Google from Emily in Parkersburg, WV regarding her Water Damage Restoration Issue.

Kind Words from Emily

"We ended up having a condensation leak in our basement which resulted in water sitting under our new floors. We wanted to be sure it would be taken care of the right way & that no mold would accumulate, even if that meant having to take up the floor.

These guys were great! They were quick to get out here, very well mannered, quality work & well knowledgeable! We did end up having to take up about half of the flooring so we’ll try to match or replace the whole thing if needed, at least I know it'll be safe with no issues now & that's all that matters!

They even took care of some mold they found starting on the walls etc & I am so grateful. Worked easily with our home insurance company & everything was a breeze. Glad we were able to find out about SERVPRO to take care of us!"

We always appreciate your feedback and kind words

Christmas Fire Dangers to Your Home ** and how to avoid them in 2021 **

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

Christmas is meant to be a time shared with your loved ones. A positive time filled with laughs, not tears (unless they're crying with laughter).

But something so small and simple can grow into destruction.

Fires.

And in this festive time, there are so many fire hazards that are out and about in your home that are not around the rest of the year.

Here are three common Christmas fire triggers in your home.

3 Common Areas Christmas Fires Start

  • The Christmas tree the lights on the trees can heat up and cause a fire in the home.
  • Fireplace decorations being so close to fire, they can be a hazard for catching on fire.
  • Candle Flames they are so beautiful, but we easily forget about them, and this creates a problem waiting to happen.

So what can I do without Ruining the Joy of Christmas?

  • The Christmas Tree ornaments Make a habit of checking all your electrical decorations and lights before turning them on for the first time. After sitting in storage for 11 months a lot of decay and/or damage can happen, making them a risk to short circuiting or sparking.
  • The Fireplace decorations - keep all items at least 4 feet (ideally 6ft) away from the fire place.
  • Candle Flames - if possible avoid using candles with open flames. Either use cover flames or even electronic candles (some of them now look so real!). If you really cannot avoid open flames (or any flames for that matter) then never leave a room unattended if a candle is lit.

By covering just these simple steps you will dramatically reduce the risk of home fires (big and small) and ensure that you will really enjoy this Christmas.

Keep safe and enjoy this beautiful time with your loved ones.

Merry Christmas from the Team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

How to Safely Thaw a Pipe (PLUS Something You Should Seriously Avoid)

11/29/2021 (Permalink)

With Fall coming in fast, there’s no denying it is getting cold in Wood County! So this is a little reminder that if you’re pipes are starting to freeze it’s important to correctly thaw them otherwise you may be putting your pipes at risk of cracking. A cracking pipe can create much bigger problems.

1. Turn off the Water Supply

Turn off the water supply to the section of the house where the frozen pipe is. If this isn’t possible, turn off the entire house. This is because frozen water may be acting as a plug, backing up the water, putting pressure on the pipes, risking a burst or crack.

2. Have a mop, bucket at towels on the ready

This is just in case of a leak. At times there may be a leak (minor or major) and it’s important to catch the water before it goes too far and wide.

3. Use a space heater, heat lamp or hair dryer

Using these appliances will help the pipe to slowly, and safely thaw out. It’s important to avoid using a propane torch because the propane torch can be a high risk for fire.

[Another option]

Wrapping the pipes with thermostatically controlled heat tape (prices range from $50 to $200, depending on the length you’re needing) is a really neat and effective way to thaw out frozen pipes (but more pricey than the methods in point 3.

We hope this has helped. Keep safe this fall and winter and a happy thanks giving from the team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

2 MINUTES to Save Your Business A FEW THOUSAND Dollars

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

Flooding and water damage in West Virginian Businesses can become quite costly in a matter of moments.

BUT

By taking 2 minutes to read this blog post now (when you don’t really need to) you will be better equipped if that time comes.

5 Simple Steps to Take Before We Arrive

  1. Turn off any electricity immediately - this is a high danger to all persons in the building. Electricity travels through water extremely fast and can injure or even kill. Please do this immediately, but only if safe to do so. Do not put yourself in danger.
  2. Stop the Water at the Source - if at all possible (and safe to do so), stop any water from continuing into the premises. The more water, the more damage and clean up necessary.
  3. Remove and Mop All Visible Water - This step alone will significantly decrease the labor required by our team and save your business a lot of money.
  4. Put Up Warning Signs - this is for the safety of yourself and your business. Using highly visible signage is important to minimize the likelihood of someone getting injured in your business work place.
  5. If possible - remove furniture or place plastic underneath them - water is sneaky. It can get up into your wooden furniture and rust metal. If you can remove it (safety first), or even put plastic underneath it, stopping water from being able to damage it, this will save you a lot of money in damages later.

Every Hour Costs Your Business Money

Our team endeavours to complete the job professionally and quickly so that you can get back to what you do best.

What To Do Now

If you haven't already called us, please call 304-428-7378 now and our team can further assist over the phone, before coming out.

  • Resting time? Rest the turkey for at least 15 minutes before carving.

Safe methods of Thawing that Turkey

Frozen Always make sure your turkey is completely thawed before you start cooking it.

How to Long Thaw Your frozen turkey needs 24 hours thawing time for every five pounds of turkey. For quicker thawing, place the turkey in a cold water bath (it is not safe to thaw a turkey with warm water) and change the water every 30 minutes until it’s thawed — about a half-hour per pound.

Want to Brine the Turkey? Any turkey will taste better if brined in salt for a day or two before cooking. Brining is not necessary but it is a good idea. This method has become popular over the last few years and involves immersing the turkey in a salt-water solution or dry-brining in salt for a day or so before cooking. The end result is moist, well seasoned white and dark meat. We’ve had great results with brining and heartily endorse it, although our method here will still work without brining.

Cooking Your Turkey

Let’s cook some turkey!

INGREDIENTS

  • One (1) whole turkey, any size, thawed if frozen
  • Two (2) cups low-sodium chicken broth, vegetable broth, water, or other liquid
  • Two (2) sticks (1 cup) of melted unsalted butter or oil, for basting (optional)

EQUIPMENT

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

  • Prepare and thaw the turkey.
  • Remove any packaging and the bag of giblets (check in the body cavity and in the neck cavity).
  • Set the turkey breast-side up on the roasting rack set in a roasting pan and let it sit while the oven preheats.
  • This takes the chill off the meat, which helps the meat cook faster and more evenly.
  • It also gives the skin time to dry out, which promotes browning and crisping. (Note: Your turkey will likely still feel cool to the touch after sitting at room temperature — that's fine and you can continue on with roasting.)

STEP 2

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F.
  • Position an oven rack in the bottom third of your oven, remove any racks above it, and heat the oven to 450°F.
  • If you brined your turkey, as we did, no need to do anything now.
  • If your turkey is straight out of the package, rub it with some salt and pepper before putting it in the oven.
  • We recommend leaving your turkey un-stuffed and un-trussed, both because it's easier and because the turkey will cook more evenly.

STEP 3

  • Add liquid to the roasting pan.
  • When ready to roast, pour the broth or water into the roasting pan.

STEP 4

  • Place the turkey in the oven and turn down the heat.
  • Place the turkey in the oven and turn down the heat to 350°F.
  • We recommend roasting turkeys breast-side up, shield the breast meat with aluminum foil toward the end of cooking if it starts getting too browned.

STEP 5

  • Roast the turkey.
  • The rule of thumb for cooking a turkey is 13 minutes per pound.
  • Some factors like brining the bird, cooking with an empty (un-stuffed) cavity, and leaving the legs un-trussed will contribute to much faster cooking.
  • Plan on the 13-minute-per-pound rule, but start checking the temperature of your turkey about halfway through the scheduled cooking time to gauge how fast it's cooking.

STEP 6

  • Baste the turkey every 45 minutes.
  • Every 45 minutes, remove the turkey from the oven, close the oven door (don't let that heat out!), and baste the turkey all over.
  • To baste, tilt the pan if needed and use a turkey baster or spoon to scoop up the pan liquids and drizzle them on top of the turkey.
  • Basting with pan juices cools the surface of the turkey and slows down cooking, which in turn keeps the breast meat cooking at close to the same rate as the legs and thighs.
  • In the final 45 minutes or so of cooking, you can also baste the turkey with melted butter or oil. This helps crisp up the skin and turn it a beautiful deep golden brown.

STEP 7

  • Check the turkey's temperature.
  • Begin checking the turkey's temperature about halfway through the estimated cooking time.
  • Check the temperature in three places: the breast, outer thigh, and inside thigh (see photos above).
  • In every case, the meat should be at least 165°F when the turkey has finished cooking.
  • If any place is under that temperature, put the turkey back in the oven for another 20 minutes. Shield the breast meat with foil if needed to keep it from overcooking.

STEP 8

  • Rest the turkey before carving.
  • Remove the turkey from the oven.
  • Grab one side of the roasting rack with an oven mitt and tilt the whole pan so the liquids inside the turkey cavity run out into the pan. (These juices are used to make the gravy.)
  • Then, lift the whole turkey (still on the rack) and transfer it to a clean cutting board. Tent the turkey loosely with aluminum foil and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
  • This gives time for the meat to firm up and the juices to be re-absorbed into the muscle tissue, making the turkey easier to slice and taste juicier.

STEP 8

  • Carve the turkey.
  • Carve the turkey the same way you would carve a chicken; see the video above for a walk-through of the process.
  • Remove the wings first, then the thighs, then the breast meat.
  • Once you have the meat off, you can separate the thighs into thighs and drumsticks and carve the breast meat into individual slices.

STEP 9

  • Don't forget about the leftovers!
  • Once you've sat down at the table, don't forget about the turkey back on the counter. The leftover meat needs to be refrigerated within two hours of cooking, after which the risk of something nasty taking up residence starts to increase exponentially.

Now you have a delicious turkey for thanksgiving and it's time to enjoy some much needed moments and create memories with the family.

A Frozen Pipe Could Cost you $20,000! *Do this FREE thing BEFORE winter*

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

As winter rolls out SERVPRO is called because West Virginian families have sustained water damage in walls or even flooding because of a frozen spigot. This can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars up to tens of thousands of dollars in restoration fees.

3 PRE-CAUTIONS TO DO BEFORE WINTER HITS

  1. Disconnect your hose: Do this step in Fall. If you’re reading this after, do it now! When a hose is connected it holds a small amount of water and this water freezes and expands in the hose, blocking it. This can cause a leak or even a burst pipe down the line.
  2. Use an Outdoor Faucet Cover: This is the next step and a lesser thought of one. Disconnecting your hose is one thing, but does not make your spigot winterized just yet. Most hardware stores supply outdoor faucet covers and are relatively inexpensive. A small step to take, a large headache avoided.
  3. Install a Frost-Free Faucet: This is the more permanent solution of the three and a highly recommended one. As the name suggests, this is a faucet designed to survive in freezing conditions. HOWEVER: it is still very important that you disconnect your hose during the Fall. While the frost-free faucets are a great solution, they are not 100% fail-safe. The water trapped in the hose can still be at risk of freezing, expanding and ultimately damaging the faucet, or creating further water damage.

WHY DOES THIS EVEN MATTER?

When the tip is frozen it creates a blockage. When any water tries to flow through the pipe it builds up and can burst a pipe, flooding the walls, the basement or anywhere else the pipes lead through the home.

WHEN DO THESE BURSTS OCCUR?

They can happen in the winter or leading into spring. When this happens it is common that the family does not notice the problem until Spring! Weeks to months later. Which means that any water damage has become much, much worse. Yes, this means more money for remediation. So please, do not forget to disconnect your hose.

Are you Covered?

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

Winter is on the way

It’s no surprise that winter is coming, and temperatures will be dropping before we know it here in West Virginia. Winter storms can come up, sometimes without a warning. Sometimes we have enough time to prepare, and sometimes we don’t. As a homeowner, it is important that you think about these moments before they happen.

Are you Covered?

Do you have the right insurance policy? Is your home going to be covered in the event of possible storm damage? Is the amount of coverage going to be enough to restore your home? Asking yourself these questions before the storm damage occurs can make your life after the storm much easier.

Before you do anything else, stop and make sure your home is covered for the following:

  • Water and Windstorm Damage
  • Sewer Backup Due to Flooding
  • Sump Pump Failures Due to Flooding
  • Debris or Tree Removal
  • Additional Living Expenses in case a storm forces you to evacuate your home

Once you have the correct home insurance coverage for storm damage, it will give you a little more peace of mind when a winter storm occurs. Seeing the damage to your home after a winter storm can be taxing emotionally. The best thing you can do for you, your family, and your home is to begin the storm damage restoration as soon as possible.

We want you to know that our team is here to help after every storm! SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie and Pleasants Counties is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year!

Winter Weather is Right Around the Corner

10/25/2021 (Permalink)

Winter Is Coming

It won’t be long before the leaves fall off the tree’s, the temperatures start to drop, and we have our very first snowfall here in Wood County WV. Your friends here at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, and Pleasants Counties want to make sure you and your family are prepared for the freezing temperatures and the storms that come along with the winter season.

  • Cut and Cover. Winter prep starts before the first snowflake falls. Make sure to cut all overhanging tree limbs and old limbs that could break off in the middle of a storm. Also, cover outdoor faucets to protect them from freezing.
  • Seal and Caulk. Its time to get those windows and doors sealed tight. New weather-stripping can help fix many draft issues, especially if your old weather-stripping is wearing down. Also, small cracks can be caulked to help prevent moisture damage.
  • Wrap Exposed Pipes. Temperatures can drop drastically and quickly during a winter storm. That can be bad news for pipes that are exposed and unprotected below or around your house. Especially if they are exposed to low temperatures outside. This could lead to frozen pipes and water damage.  If it’s going to get extremely cold, you can wrap exposed pipes around the house in insulation to help protect them. Make sure to leave sink cabinets open to the warm air and turning faucets on a cold "drip." This can also prevent freezing pipes during winter storms.
  • Plan a Second Method of Heating. Electricity goes out more often than not when a winter storm hits.  Most furnaces require electricity. That means you need either a generator that can feed your home enough power to run your large heating appliances or another source of heating that doesn't need electricity. Example: a wood stove, wood fireplace.
  • Buy Heating Fuel If Necessary. Make sure you have enough firewood if that is your alternate heat source. Or you may want to call your propane company to get an early refill to be prepared.
  • Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors. Homes tend to stay closed up during the winter. It’s important to make sure that your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working and have new batteries. This step can save your life, make sure you heck your detectors so you’re prepared!

  • Stock Up on Salt. When the ice or snow storm passes, you will want a way to melt the ice that forms on your driveways, sidewalks and patios.

  • Know where your Home Owners Insurance Documents are. You may not need them, but its important to check on your homeowner’s insurance documents and make sure you can get to them. That way if your home does end up with damage in a storm, you’ll know what is covered, and you’ll be make a claim as soon as possible.

Following these steps to prepare for a winter storm can keep your home and your family safe. It's the most wonderful time of the year, be sure to stay warm and stay safe!

Fire Prevention

10/12/2021 (Permalink)

October:Fire Prevention Month

October is National Fire Prevention Month. At SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, and Pleasants Counties, we wanted to remind everyone to practice their fire escape plans and test their smoke alarms in order to prevent house fires. We also wanted to remind you of some simple things you can do to lower your risk of a fire:

  • Test your smoke detector regularly. The easiest way to avoid a fire is by checking your smoke alarms. Press the little button to test it. If the beep is weak, change the batteries as soon as possible.
  • Inspect your heating sources. If your heating sources are not working right, they can trigger a fire. Your heat source needs to be in a place that is away from anything that is flammable. Make sure you clean your heating source regularly to keep dirt and debris from catching fire
  • Clean your stove and oven. Cleaning your oven and stove can prevent food particles from getting too hot and causing a fire.
  • Don’t Leave the Kitchen when you’re cooking. It takes just a few seconds for a fire to start. If you have to leave your kitchen, make sure to turn off your burner first.
  • Check your Dryer. Make sure you clean your lint trap every time you do a new load of laundry. Inspecting your dryer on a yearly basis is great as well.
  • Check your cords. Before plugging something in, make sure your wires aren’t damaged. If they are, replace them. This can be a huge fire hazard. Check where you are running your cords as well, running them under a rug or between your wall and your furniture can be a bad idea, because cords tend to get hot.
  • Use Candles Cautiously. Who doesn’t love a good, scented candle? Especially in the fall. Make sure putting them out before leaving a room. If you feel like you’re about to go to sleep, make sure the candle is out. Keep them out of reach of pets and children. Placing them on a hard even surface. Keeping them away from any objects can prevent a possible fire as well.
  • Store flammable objects properly. Hairspray, cleaning products, and even shaving cream can be as hazard if they are exposed to a lot of heat, they can combust. Store them in a cool area.
  • Keep a Fire extinguisher handy. Fire extinguishers are your best friend when a fire starts. Be sure to have one definitely in the kitchen. Make sure each family member knows where it is and how to use it, so if a fire does happen, it can be put out as quickly as it started.
  • Use caution with your fireplace. Make sure you have a door between your fire and your floor. Never leave the room when a fire is going. When you put your fire out make sure your ashes are cool before throwing them out. Also, throw them away in a metal container that is specifically just for the fireplace ashes.

House fires are most often caused by cooking and heating equipment risks, which increase during this time of the year. This month is a great time for families to prepare themselves before the most high-risk time of year for fires, and fire emergencies. Preventing and preparing could save your life and your home. Having an escape plan in place and practicing it, is just as important as doing all the things listed above! Be sure to prepare and stay safe this holiday season!

Fall Gutter Clean-out

10/4/2021 (Permalink)

Time to clean out those gutters

Here at SERVPRO we so excited for the fall and everything it brings: sweater weather, football, hot cocoa, bonfires, the list goes on! Autumn is great for the soul.

With that being said don't forget to clean out those gutters. In the fall, we see leaves and needles dropping constantly. SERVPRO has been restoring storm damage for years here in Wood County WV. In some cases, clogged gutters have been the cause of damage from the rain from the storms.

Preventing damage

Gutter cleaning is extremely important to keeping your property in good condition all year. Rain gutters help protect your house from water damage, but if they’re not cleared out and leaves build up in the fall, they’re more likely to damage your home than protect it.

What are gutters and why do they matter?

Gutters are guards that protect your home from rain and water damage. They’re made to transport rainwater from your roof and drain water to the ground through a spout.  The water is then carried away from your home onto your lawn so it doesn’t collect on your roof, which could lead to mold, rotting, and deterioration of shingles, etc.

In many cases, clogged gutters and downspouts have caused damage from storms/rain by directing the water into the home instead of away from it. When rain gutters are working properly, they will direct rain away from the roofline and foundation. Preventing damage, instead of causing it.

A late-fall cleanout also prepares your gutters for winter’s dropping temps, and winter storms. It will keep debris from freezing in the gutter. An autumn cleaning will also reduce the amount of work you will face in the spring. So, here is your friendly reminder to give your gutters some TLC this season. Happy Fall, from your friends here at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, and Pleasants Counties.

Preventing Storm Damage

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

We're here for you.

Here at SERVPRO, our team is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We're ready for whatever happens, whenever it happens. We have state-of-the-art training in water, fire, & storm damage restoration. We use our training and hands on experience to dry your home or business from any water damage and restore it back to normal; "Like it never even happened." With that being said, we want you and your family to stay as safe as possible.

Storm Damage Prevention

Here are some steps that you can take in order to help prevent damage to your home or business during a storm:

  • Trim Trees & shrubs around your home or business. This can prevent branches from breaking in the wind and becoming projectiles.
  • Secure fences. Make sure your fence is as secure as possible to help prevent it from getting blown up against the house.
  • Secure outdoor furniture. Patio furniture and grills can damage the outside of your home during high winds. Anchor your furniture down or take it inside before a storm hits.
  • Check gutters. Prevent damage to the inside of your home by having your downspouts pointing away from your house. Also, clear any dirt and debris from the gutters.
  • Protect Windows & doorways. Adding a barrier in front of your windows and doorways can prevent damage from occurring from high winds.
  • Protect anything of value. Keep valuables safe by putting them in waterproof containers. Put any important documents in a safe or fire safe box.
  • Have an emergency kit. Prepare your emergency kit with enough food, water to last for three to four days. This should include water, food, a battery powered radio, a flashlight, a first aid kit, and a cell phone with a charger.
  • Have an emergency plan. Having a backup plan is needed is very important. Make sure everyone knows the established plan and the place to go incase evacuation is needed.

4 Things to NEVER Do with a Bonfire this Fall

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Bonfires are one of our favorite Fall pass times, where we create great memories with our friends and family. But there are some very important safety precautions to take to be sure you don’t burn anything down.

What to do When Building a Bonfire (and avoid headaches)

  • Let your neighbors know you’re having one because you don’t want them to complain (it’s just not worth it).
  • Use dry materials for the bonfire, using damp materials will create more smoke, which will annoy you and your neighbors.
  • Build your bonfire at least 5 times it’s height away from other fixtures such as the house, sheds, fences and trees, with a minimum of 10 feet.
  • Keep away from telephone wires and cables

4 Things to NEVER Do with Your Bonfire

  • Never leave the bonfire unattended
  • Never throw any fireworks into the fire
  • Never use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going as it may get out of control quickly
  • Never burn aerosols, tires, canisters or anything containing foam or paint - many produce toxic fumes and some containers may explode, causing injury

2 Very Important Safety Precautions

  • Keep a fire extinguisher or hose and faucet within 20 feet of the fire
  • When the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting.

How Long Should you Wait if the Sewer Backs up?

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

a room full of sewage and a technician wearing a gas mask This is what a Sewage Back Up can look like!

Trust when we say ... you don't want this. But you already knew that.

Sewage back up can be very hazardous to our health. It is home to a lot of bacteria and disease. Therefore it is so important that it is treated thoroughly as soon as possible.

SEWAGE GETS INTO EVERYTHING!

Sewage gets right into every crack and crevice it gets near. It will settle into carpet, wood, tiles, anything and everything!

PLEASE BE CAREFUL

It is our suggestion that you do not touch anything.  Sewage is riddled with dangers and it is not worth risking your health.

As you can see in the photo, our technician is wearing a gas mask. They're also wearing PPE all over, including a full protective suit.

At all costs, we are taking the safest method to completely dispose of the sewage. From full clean up through to disinfecting the areas thoroughly. It must be safely dealt with.

How Long Should I Wait After the Sewage Backs Up?

The short answer is ... do not wait. Call a specialist immediately. As mentioned earlier, the longer you wait, the more ground in it becomes. From the sewage through to the smell.

Act fast for an easier removal.

3 Ways to Minimize the Need for Storm Damage Restoration Services

4/26/2021 (Permalink)

1. Inspect Your Roof on Regular Intervals

Something as simple as a cracked tile or a blown off shingle can cause real damage in a storm. The power of water is that it only needs a small area to enter, but it can get in and travel through the walls and other structures, damaging a much wider area. This can cost a lot!

Set up periodic checks on your roof (at least every 6 months) to make sure that your roof is still in tact. You can either do this yourself (but be very careful) or have a professional check. A professional checking may cost as little as $100 (or less), but damage can cost in the $1,000s!

2. Trim Dead Wood around Your Home on Regular Intervals

By far the most common cause of damage to a home is caused by flying debris. Trees are a big liability in our area.

Just like your roof, have regular intervals during the year that you check for, and cut, dead branches on nearby trees.

3. Consider Storm-Safe Windows

High-quality storm windows will help prevent unnecessary breaks of windows during a strong storm. In addition to breaks, it will also prevent leaks. Both of which can be very inconvenient and uncomfortable for your family.

For more tips on how to avoid the need for costly storm damage restoration services, contact our team from SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties at 304-428-7378 we’d be more than happy to help.

How a Small Amount of Water In Your Home Can Create a Major Health Hazard (and how to resolve it)

4/12/2021 (Permalink)

Water is invasive and silent. It can sit inside your carpet and other furniture, a bring life. But sometimes to the type of life that poses potential health effects.

Mold.

Mold and Black Toxic Mold can grow from a very small amount of moisture in the air. This is where it becomes a problem.

Feeding ground.

Mold and Black Toxic Mold release spores into the air. These spores, when inhaled, can create health effects.

Take action.

Some moisture is necessary in the air, but in highly humid areas, it’s important to release the moisture. Areas that are highly prone to humidity include the bathroom, laundry and some basements.

Release the moisture.

Open the windows or turn on an exhaust fan and let the moisture out. When it can escape, it will. The moisture wants to get out of the house and into the atmosphere. Let it.

Wipe down the excess.

At times the moisture creates condensation on the walls. Wipe this down as soon as possible so that the water cannot seep into the materials and create a mold-breeding environment.

Use a Dehumidifier.

If you cannot do the two, try this option. Dehumidifiers sell at some home shops or Home Depot, but don’t be sucked in by the cheap ones because some of them don’t clear our the moisture, they just clear out your wallet.

Find out some more information.

Black Toxic Mold: Avoid Having this Risk In the Family Home

Dehumidifiers: Why are they better?

What is a Dehumidifier and Why Is It Better?

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Dehumidifiers are an important piece of equipment used in the drying process of water damage restoration, but why? Is it really necessary or just a big piece of equipment to look fancy?

The Silent Killer - Water

Where fire is obvious, water can damage your items in silence and slowly, until it’s too late. Unlike fire, water comes in different forms that cause damage; liquid and vapor, and when left alone, they allow for mold growth as well as other issues, such as erosion of your structures.

Even after the obvious water has been removed, there is still humidity (water vapor) in the air. This vapor creates a breeding ground for mold, and also the opportunity to shift into water and damage furniture.

This is Why Dehumidifiers are Used

As the name suggests, the dehumidifiers remove the humidity (and moisture) from the air and other materials.

By removing the moisture, your furniture and other items are significantly less likely to be vulnerable to mold growth.

If you ever need any questions answered, or need help with fire, mold, storm or water damage, please call your local team at SERVPRO on 304-428-7378 or contact us on our contact page.

6 Important Points to Know About Candle Fires in Homes in West Virginia

3/29/2021 (Permalink)

Home fires are often caused by the smallest, and most beautiful looking items in our homes. A simple scented (or non-scented) candle can turn your home from beauty to burned down in a matter of minutes.

Candles serve their purpose and it’s important that if you enjoy them, keep using them, but please practice safety whenever using candles.

To give you (and the community) a bigger understanding of the dangers  National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org) here are 6 important points you know should know to understand how common it is. Hopefully this will motivate more safety in our community.

During the five-year period of 2014-2018:

  1. Candles caused 2% of reported home fires, 3% of home fire deaths, 6% of home fire injuries, and 4% of the direct property damage in home fires.
  2. Roughly one-third (37%) of home candle fires started in bedrooms. These fires caused 40% of the associated deaths and 49% of the associated injuries.
  3. Falling asleep was a factor in 10% percent of the home candle fires and 15% of the associated deaths.
  4. On average, 21 home candle fires were reported per day.
  5. Three of every five (60%) of home candle fires occurred when some form of combustible material was left or came too close to the candle.
  6. December is the peak time of year for home candle fires. In December, 12% of home candle fires began with decorations compared to 4% the rest of the year.

A burned down home or business is not only traumatic, it’s also a very slow, long and expensive process to get your life back to normal again. Please be careful, and follow the safety measures.

If you would like more information on fire safety we have a lot of great resources that you can read though by clicking here.

3 Ways Your Electricals Can Burn Down Your House (and how to avoid it)

3/23/2021 (Permalink)

Electrical Fires are common problems in the family home (and in businesses). Their damage can range from small to catastrophe.

At SERVPRO, we've seen family homes severely damaged from easily avoidable electrical issues. We urge you to read this closely, but more importantly follow the steps. A few minutes every few months could save your home or business going up in flames.

What Are The Leading Causes of Electrical Fires?

1. A lack of air flow: Electrical equipment and wires heat up. Obvious? Yep! But we commonly have multiple wires sitting together, without the ability to cool down. Just like this person in Parkersburg! [Click here to view]

2. Overloading the Circuit. Have you ever seen (or even have) a power board with piles of cords plugged into it? Sometimes these can get so crazy that it looks like a game of Pick up Sticks. Each cable added to the power board exponentially increases the risk of short-circuiting happening, which can spark and cause a fire.

3. Damaged Wires: Damaged wires are a fire waiting to happen. Similar to having an overloaded circuit, a damaged wire has a dramatically increased risk of creating a spark and therefore creating a fire.

How to Avoid these Risks in under 5 minutes.

Make sure to routinely check your power outlets and wires. It will take you less than a few minutes to do the entire home (or business).

  1. Check your wires have enough space: Resolving this issue will be the longest to fix of the three. This issue may require professional help such as from an electrician. But before you "put this on the back burner" have another look at what happened to a home in Parkersburg (who were lucky). [Click here to view]
  2. Check your Power Outlets: As a general rule, if your power boards have 3 sockets, only use the 3. Do not add additional adapters into the sockets.
  3. Replace all damaged wires: Wires are thankfully affordable to replace these days. So if there's a cable that's damaged, throw it out and buy a new one. If it requires special attention we recommend calling your local electrician for help. Remember, a few dollars to get someone to fix it is cheaper than a burned out room in your home!

SERVPRO Technicians will consider these 4 Dangers when treating your Water Damage Restoration Service

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

During any water damage restoration service there are 4 major dangers that are at play. These include Electrical Hazards, Mold, Septic Tank Spillage & Other Waste Hazards and Structural Damage.

To better understand how our technicians approach these dangers we will give some information in this article. Each job will have differences and nuances and your technician will be better suited to answer detailed about your job.

Electrical Hazards

Electricity and water mix a little too well, and this makes it dangerous. When approaching any water issues our technicians will immediately assess any electrical connections and make sure that they’re turned off.

If you are aware of any circuit boards or other electrical outlets please notify the technicians immediately so that they can neutralize the issue as soon as possible to keep themselves, and others safe.

Mold

Mold growth after water damage is highly likely. Without proper eradication of water (in all areas) your home / premises is vulnerable to mold growth. SERVPRO technicians will make sure that full water eradication through use of fans and other drying appliances is achieved.

Septic Tank Spillage & Other Waste Hazards

Septic tanks and other biological waste spillage is a potential health hazard to people. This type of water can carry high amounts of bacteria and fungi which could cause serious health effects.

For this reason when SERVPRO technicians are called out and we notice one of these issues, the area is immediately block access to the area to prevent any further contamination.

Please notify the SERVPRO technicians of known septic tanks when they arrive so that they can check for any potential ruptures.

Structural Damage

Water is highly effective at creating structural damage (even more so than fire), and what’s more is that water can slowly erode the structure. SERVPRO technicians will check thoroughly through the buildings fixtures, structures and supports to make sure that your building is structurally sound and free from any potential water.

Please remember: Each job will have differences and nuances and your technician will be better suited to answer detailed about your job.

3 Ways Your Kitchen Can Burn Your House Down (and How to Avoid It)

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

Home fires in Wood County and surrounding areas can cost families $10,000 to well over $100,000, and in 90% of occurrences, they are easily avoidable.

After 3 years in the local area we have noticed that there are 3 common causes of home fires. Knowing them is important so that you can avoid having this heartbreaking event happen to you. And here is the first of the 3:

Your Cooking Equipment

Cooking fires are placed as the number one cause of home fires in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association. This is consistent with what we’ve seen in the local area.

Best Practices to Keep Your Home and Family Safe

Never walk away from the stove / kitchen top.

In a matter of minutes (sometimes even less) pots and pans can overheat, catching something nearby on fire, which can quickly escalate to a much larger fire.

DO NOT have any Flammable items within 3 feet of your stove, toaster or any other items that cook.

This is a matter of minimising risk. If something is to catch fire by accident, if something is close, it adds to the fire and allows it to spread (or jump) to the next item. So keep all flammable items including towels more than 3 feet away so that if a fire starts it cannot spread.

NEVER throw water onto burning oil or grease.

We cannot stress how dangerous this is. By throwing water onto your burning oil you’re creating a bomb. The water initially goes below the oil / grease, but heats up fast, turning to gas, which then tries to quickly escape above the oil / grease, causing the oil/grease to explode. This will likely burn your face and body, and also jump onto other flammable items. Do this instead: turn off the stove. Let it cool down on its own.

We hope this helped. If you have any further questions or would like some tips, please do not hesitate to call us on 304-428-7378 or email us on this page —> click here.

3 Ways Your Electricals Can Burn Down Your House (and how to avoid it)

Do THIS Easy and Free Trick to Avoid Expensive Gutter Collapse this Winter

3/1/2021 (Permalink)

The Mid-Ohio Vally has been hit by an excessive amount of snow the past two weeks and homes are falling prey to roof and gutter collapses all around the area as a result.

If you haven’t already; make sure to do this simple trick to help rid your roof and gutters of snow build up.

Why Does the Gutter Collapse?

When snow builds up in your gutters some of that snow temporarily melts, becomes water, and then solidifies to ice. This allows more water (ice) to fill up your gutters and create a much heavier unit that sits in your gutters.

Your Gutters are not Build to Hold That

Gutters are only built to temporarily hold water before it streams down the pipes. So when it has weight for extended periods of time, it weighs down the gutters and joinery, pulling them off.

They Pull the Walls and Roof Too

It’s rarely a clean rip. The gutters don’t just come off, they bring the walls, tiles and supports with them; potentially creating holes in the roof, or walls, letting snow and water into your home. This becomes much more expensive in the remediation process because now you have to restore outside, inside and the supports. Not to mention water damage and possible mold growth too.

DO THIS: Throw Your Pantyhose on the Roof

This cheap and simple trick is well known, but perhaps not completely understood. But knowing why you’re doing it, will help you know where is the best place to throw them.

Step 1: Fill some old pantyhose (or even buy new, they’re quite affordable) with salt or calcium chloride then tie up the end tightly so that it’s like a ball of salt in the foot of the pantyhose.

Step 2: Fling the pantyhose onto the roof at different heights. The higher the better (we’ll explain why in the next section).

Step 3: If possible, keep an eye on the pantyhose because you may need to throw some more up later to replenish.

Why does this work?

First we must know the freezing points for both water and salt water. Water has a freezing point of 32ºF where as salt water freezes at 28.4ºF. This difference is all the reason! … huh?

Ok, so when the snow melts slightly, the salt in the pantyhose mixes with the water, creating salt(ish) water. Now, it requires a lower temperature to freeze. This difference means that the snow will take longer to freeze, allowing it time to escape down your drains and not stay in the gutters.

Wrapping it up:

So there you have it, fling up those salty pantyhose so the water and snow takes a little longer to freeze, and you will minimise the chance of ice freezing in your gutters.

We hope this helped. If you have any further questions or would like some tips, please do not hesitate to call us on 304-428-7378 or email us on this page —> click here.

4 Common Water Issues in West Virginian Businesses (Do THIS to avoid them)

1/18/2021 (Permalink)

Do you want a $100,000+ water restoration expense? This is what some of the most dramatic bills have been in the past two years but avoiding it might cost only a few hundred dollars.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to call our team on 304-428-7378 or email your questions to office@SERVPRO10649.com

We hope this has helped.

IS COVID CLEANING REALLY NECESSARY?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

2021 is here and there does not seem to be an end to the pandemic restrictions in the immediate future. but should we bother about sanitizing our homes and businesses for COVID?

This layered (and perhaps annoying) question has so many differing views on the internet and traditional media from “is the virus even real?” to pure fear. So …

Is COVID actually real?

The short answer … yes.

Symptoms such as loss of smell and taste are not flu-like symptoms. But …

Do we really have to be safe?

Let’s remove emotion and (even) science for a second and look at what we know is happening:

  1. If COVID cases rise in areas the authorities have the ability to restrict (or even close) shops and other venues. This effects people’s livelihood drastically.
  2. People are getting sick from COVID and it spreads very fast.

So the question we have to ask ourselves is: "Do you want your business to be responsible for spreading this?"

True or not, the news picks these stories up fast to "notify the public" and the fear surrounding those venues lingers long after the event.

Do we really have to sanitize?

No, you don’t have to because it’s your choice. And so your choice can be as educated as possible. Here are the pros and cons of sanitizing your home or business:

Pros:

  1. Sanitization gives a little peace of mind to anyone entering your home or business.
  2. Sanitization minimizes the chances of spread of infection and disease if it is present.
  3. (Businesses) COVID poses a lot of financial risks. If your venue is deemed “a hot spot” it could result in very bad publicity or even closing down for safety measures.

Cons:

  1. Sanitization is a cost. So weigh up your risks of not sanitizing verses sanitizing before jumping into a decision.
  2. Sanitization if not forever. It does not mean your home or venue will not have germs come back. Sanitization removes what is currently there, if something comes afterwards … it’s there.
  3. Too much sanitizing can be dangerous to our health. Make sure to not overdo it if you’re doing it yourself. Or better yet, ask a professional for advice.

Today, COVID bears risks beyond just health, it is now a financial risk. Consider all the options above before sanitizing your home or venue. Can you afford the risk?

If not, please call our team to find out if your home or business should have sanitization: 304-428-7378 or contact us through our contact us page.

Keep safe,

Do THIS to Avoid Snowfall Damage to your Roof

12/21/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • The dangers of snowfall and how it can damage your home
  • How to save thousands in restoration and cleanup

Everyone dreams of a white Christmas, but is your home prepared for heavy snowfall? Every year, family homes in West Virginia have to undergo restoration work due to damage caused by heavy snowfall. Take these few steps to making sure your home is ready for snow, and save thousands in restoration costs.

How does it damage my home?

  1. Water damage - When snow and ice on your home begins to melt it needs sufficient drainage for your home to avoid damage. At this time, clogged gutters and roof leaks will make themselves known as the water begins to come into your ceiling, or around the foundations of your home.
  2. Electrical damage - Water pooling is common in winter, and may go unnoticed at first. If water enters your attic, or the structure of your home, you’re likely to end up with damaged electrical appliances and circuits.

2 SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN DO

Follow these two simple steps to ensure your home is ready for winter snowfall.

  1. Check your roof - Before snow begins to fall and the rain starts, check your roof for any cracked tiles or openings. Look for any cracks or openings that may have occurred during Summer and Fall. One small crack could create damages worth thousands if not fixed. SERVPRO advises seeking professional help if you are at higher risk of injuring yourself by performing this check.
  2. Clean the gutters - After Fall, it is common to have gutters filled with leaves and debris. This clutter will create many problems, minimizing water flow when the ice begins to melt. This water can effect walls, ceilings or even foundations of your home. Again, these damages could cost thousands to restore.

3 Christmas Fire Dangers That Could Burn Your Christmas Cheers (and how to avoid them)

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

It’s meant to be the most wonderful time of the year but do you know how to keep it that way and avoid dangerous fires? You may not want to think of “what could go wrong”, but let’s prepare on how to avoid it, to ensure safety this Christmas.

Lucky for you, it only takes a few simple steps to keep your house and family safe during the festive season. When you finish this article, you’ll feel confident and safe celebrating Christmas at home.

3 Festive Dangers & How To Avoid Them

  • Christmas Light Fires - Christmas lights bring families joy every year, but these festive decorations can often spark fires. Before lighting up your house and tree, be mindful to check each bulb individually and ensure they are not damaged. Also check for exposed wires inside and outside, because when they get wet, they could create a deadly spark on your Christmas tree.
  • Fireplace Decorations - Stockings upon the fireplace can turn your home into a Winter Wonderland. Would you know what to do if they caught fire? We don’t often consider the dangers of such a beautiful decoration, but they can quickly help a flame escape the fireplace. When decorating, keep a safe distance between your stockings and the fireplace. If possible, avoid decorating the top and sides. This will give you peace of mind when trying to keep warm at Christmas.
  • Candle Flames - Candles are responsible for hundreds of fires each Christmas. Getting caught up in Christmas festivities might mean we leave candles burning during the night, or place flammable items next to them. To reduce the risk of fire make sure there are no lit candles in your home before you go to bed, or in easy to reach places. Something as simple as keeping candles off coffee or dining tables could stop a fire from starting.

Read our related articles and make sure you’re prepared for the worst case scenario. Not only will you save thousands in repairs, but you could save family and friends from deadly flames.

3 Ways To Protect Your Business From The Damage Of Mold

12/14/2020 (Permalink)

3 ways you can save your business before it goes under

After Storms Hit: These 3 Actions Could Save You Thousands

12/7/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • 3 things that are often forgotten about after a storm
  • How to save thousands in restoration costs

After a storm it’s easy to focus on the big problems like roof repairs, and basement flooding. There are 3 things that are often forgotten about, which can end up costing thousands in repair and restoration. We have listed them below to help you take care of them before the expensive bill arrives.

3 Things To Fix To Save Thousands:

  1. Sewage Cleanup - When storms hit, flooding is common in basements and around the foundation of our homes. Flooding can also cause sewage systems to clog, and begin overflowing. After a storm, it is vital to check your sewage systems are not spilling contaminated water in and around your home. If there is any overflowing sewage around your home, ensure you remove the waste, and keep children and pets at a safe distance.
  2. Carpet Cleaning - While our carpets may appear dry after a storm, there is often excess moisture. If this moisture is not attended to and properly dried, you may be left with nasty stains around your home. To ensure your carpet doesn’t need to be replaced, open doors and windows to allow for adequate airflow. It might also be helpful to reach out for professional help, as the SERVPRO team can dehumidify your home and remove any leftover water.
  3. Odor Removal - Leaving moisture in our homes won’t only result in nasty stains, but also odors that will deter any guests or family members. These odors commonly start in basements, or carpets where water has pooled or not properly been dried. Odors can easily be removed by creating air circulation in your home, and making sure flooring is dried adequately.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

5 Actions For Fire Damage to Save Money and Headaches

11/30/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • What to do and what not to do after a fire
  • How you can save thousands on restoration before help arrives

Fires in our homes and businesses are enough to make anyone panic. This is why it’s crucial to know the basic steps to take after a blaze ignites. Not only will you keep everyone safe, but it could save you thousands on your restoration bill.

5 Actions To Take Before Help Arrives

  1. Limit Movement - Avoid using damaged carpet and upholstery until it is professionally cleaned. Walking through your home can result in further embedding of soot into the carpet, which makes it more expensive to remove, or may even require complete removal and replacement of your carpet.
  2. Protect High Traffic Areas - Place old towels or linen over high traffic areas e.g. lounges, carpeted stairs and walkways. This will save you money on cleaning, as well as stopping the spread of stains and marks throughout your property.
  3. Switch Off Electricity - Switching off your electrical appliances will reduce the risk of a fire reigniting. Circuits are often damaged during fires, and making sure they’re turned off may mean your appliance can be repaired. WARNING: In some cases damaged electricals can mean danger to bystanders such as yourself. Make sure to survey the electricals before touching. If you’re unsure do not attempt to turn anything off. Your health and safety are more important.
  4. Check Ceilings For Moisture - It is common that our ceilings become damp after a fire. Turn off any ceiling fixtures and locate the damp spots. With damaged wires, and wet ceilings, it is likely that a fire will spark again if things aren’t properly checked.
  5. Move Your Belongings - If any of your belongings remain untouched by the fire, ensure you move them to a clean space immediately. This will avoid any further damage from smoke, and reduce the chance of them becoming covered in soot during the cleaning process.

By taking these simple actions, you will be able to save thousands on your restoration bill. Don’t wait for help to arrive to save your property and belongings!

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions regarding professional water removal and water damage restoration please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

What To Do If Your Basement Floods (4 Steps)

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

  • Common causes of basement flooding
  • What to do if your basement floods

If the worst case does happen, what can you do to save thousands in water restoration and keep your family safe? Follow SERVPRO’s simple guide to keep your belongings and family safe.

4 Things To Do When Your Basement Floods

  1. Shut Off Electricity - Shut off electricity immediately. Not only will this keep your family safe, but will save you thousands in appliance replacement once the water has been cleared. SAFETY TIP: If you are wet or in water, DO NOT attempt to turn off the electricity because this is an electrocution risk. Remove yourself and anyone else from the premises and wait for emergency services.
  2. Find The Source - If it is safe to do so, enter your basement in protective clothing and locate the source of the flooding water. This might be an open window, or clogged drain.
  3. Start Removing The Water - If the damage is minimal, begin removing water with towels or a wet vacuum. This will help remove the bulk of the water, and fast track you to removing excess moisture in your basement.
  4. Get The Air Moving - Once the water has been removed, and flooding has stopped, open windows and doors to begin circulating air through your basement. This will help remove any leftover moisture, and stop any further damage to your belongings.

3 Things that will FLOOD your Basement (and how to Avoid it)

11/16/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • 3 things that cause basements to flood
  • How you can avoid spending thousands on basement flooding

It’s too often that homeowners are met by murky water when they enter their basement. Water build up and other factors make the lowest point of your home an easy target for flooding.

3 Things That Cause Basement Flooding:

  1. Insufficient Drainage - Water needs to escape. Otherwise water will build up around your basement walls. If not fixed quickly this water can become heavy enough to break through. Your basement is the lowest part of your home, therefore all excess water is highly likely to flow down to your basement as a result of poor drainage.
  2. Faulty Sump Pump - This pump could mean the difference between catching a flood right as it starts, or spending thousands on restoration work. A sump pump is triggered automatically when water enters your basement. This little guy (or gal) could save your belongings and your pockets. Be sure to routinely check your sump pump because if it isn’t, this season might be very expensive.
  3. Heavy Rains - Unfortunately for most, cracks or bad drainage is found out after the damage has occurred. Heavy rains are the most common cause of basement flooding, and make your insufficient drainage a nightmare when it’s too late. Heavy rains mean excess pooling around the foundation of your home, and make your basement an easy target.

We have put together some tips to help you avoid basement flooding (and the huge bills that come with it). Follow our simple steps to keeping your home flood free.

3 Tips To Avoid Basement Flooding:

  1. Clear Gutters - A simple way to keep your basement safe is by regularly checking your gutters for any clogs. Ensuring the gutters are working efficiently means you can avoid any water pooling around the foundations of your home.
  2. Check Your Pumps - Don’t just pay attention to your pump when it starts to rain. Check it throughout the year to ensure it is in working condition. Having a machine that automatically pumps out water will save you thousands by keeping your belongings dry and out of a pool of water.
  3. Always Close The Window - So simple, but so easily forgotten. Too often we see homes that have flooded because of an open basement window. Pooling around the window may result in water flooding into your basement, and catching electrical on its way down. When the rain starts, triple check your windows are closed and not at risk of breaking.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

THIS Silent Danger Could Cost Your Business Thousands

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • The dangers of mold in your commercial property
  • Save your business thousands in mold removals fees with our easy tips

The health and safety of your staff and customers directly affects your bottom line. A sick staff member costs you money. A poor review or experience for a customer can create widespread negative opinions of your business. Mold is always growing, but if not managed, it can create financially crippling outcomes to your business.

The Dangers of Mold to your Business:

  1. Loss of Business - Do you enjoy entering a store that smells moldy? This unpleasant odour could easily turn potential customers away from your business. Just as it turns your away from other businesses. Even if the mold has not yet developed a smell, it has likely made itself known in the form of black or yellow stains on walls, ceilings and floors. But wiping it away doesn’t remove it properly (we’ll explain what you can do later).
  2. Damaged Goods - Mold doesn’t just grow on structural elements of your property, it can also develop on various goods. Clothing, furniture and other items can easily become covered in mold, leading to a huge decrease in revenue for you and your business. These items may not be able to be restored for sale and cost you more money again.
  3. Health Problems - When running a business, the health of staff and customers must always be considered. If not managed properly, both can lead to a poor reputation (negative news spreads much faster than positive) or even in the worse case scenario, taken to the courts.

How to save your business THOUSANDS:

  1. Keep Ahead of it - Mold may seem harmless in the beginning, but can grow in a matter of days to a dangerous level. Act quickly when you see it by scrubbing the growth away with vinegar and a toothbrush or sponge - don’t just wipe! If you’re concerned about regrowth, seek professional assistance. (Remember, in most cases what you see is just the surface of the problem).
  2. Protect your Stock - take care of stock and other items in your business by moving them away from visible mold. Contain the issue area and seek assistance in removing it. If any stock has already been affected, remove the mold with a hot wash immediately.
  3. Create Routine Checks of the Premises - Expensive mold problems can be avoided at a very small price by creating a routine check (perhaps monthly). Check if any parts of your property are exposed to moisture, check them every few weeks to ensure you do not have a mold outbreak. Another helpful resolution may be to tackle the root of the growth e.g. leaking taps or water damaged items.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

3 Ways To Keep Your Family Safe During Storm Season

10/26/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • The dangers of storms when you’re unprepared
  • 3 ways to stay safe during storm season

Are you prepared for if a harsh storm hits your town? Storms can be extremely dangerous. Not just to our homes and possessions, but to our lives and family.

To help your family stay safe during this storm season follow these 3 tips for storm preparation.

3 Tips To Stay Safe This Storm Season:

  1. Turn off all electricals. Water damage brings expensive repair bills but the immediate danger to your family comes from sparking and short circuiting, which can be deadly if you’re nearby. If a large storm is forecasted, be prepared by ensuring you turn off all electrical appliances and power to your home. This will minimise chances of fires starting in the home from short circuits as well.
  2. Keep your garden maintained. Most of the damage from storms comes from the objects around the home. It is vital that large trees and plants are trimmed all year round, especially when storm season is approaching. By keeping your garden maintained, you may avoid damage from falling trees, or worse, injury to your family if they fall on your house.
  3. Check for leaks and cracks. It’s common to roof leaks when it is too late. Check your roof for cracked tiles frequently throughout the year (perhaps once every three months) and make sure any issues are fixed immediately. This will reduce chances of flooding/leaks in your home during a storm.

An easy way to make sure you remember these helpful tips, is to put them in your calender! By setting a reminder every couple of months to check your roof, or have a day of gardening, you can ensure you’re ready when a storm hits.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

These 3 Tips will Shave THOUSANDS off your Bill when Storms Hit West Virginia

10/19/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • How the restoration process works
  • 3 tips to shave thousands off your bill

Storms are even scarier when they end with a bill totalling THOUSANDS! We want to help you save money after the next big storm, and help you stay safe.

The Restoration Process

We all know that water restoration can be an expensive and time consuming process, but how does it really work? There are a few steps SERVPRO takes to ensure your home or business is restored as quickly as possible.

  1. Assess the damage - Before we get to work, we need to know how extensive the damage is, and plan how to fix it.
  2. Extract the water - Using large pumps, we remove (on average) thousands of gallons of water so we can begin replacing or drying the damaged areas. To reduce the risk of mold growth, and further damage, we start pumping out the water as soon as possible.
  3. Begin drying - After most of the water has been removed, the SERVPRO team uses equipment to get the remaining water from hard to reach places. The dehumidifiers allow our team to remove any remaining moisture.
  4. Cleaning up - To complete the process, we always clean and sanitise the affected areas. This will remove any odour caused by the moisture, and clean restorable possessions.

3 Tips to Saving Thousands

Water damage from storms doesn’t just affect your property, but it can also damage everything inside. Follow these simple tips to save thousands after the next storm!

  1. Don’t leave damp items on the floor. Hang them up and allow them to start drying immediately.
  2. Begin the restoration process by mopping and blotting the water affected areas. This will stop the water from damaging areas any further.
  3. Turn off all electricals as soon as the water enters your home. This will stop any of your appliances from getting damaged or destroyed.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

DO THIS to Keep Your Pets Safe Before & After Fires

10/12/2020 (Permalink)

a happy puppy looking over its owners shoulders Their life is our responsibility

Article at a glance:

- 3 precautions to take before a fire starts

- 3 Steps to take after a fire starts that will save your pets

Fires start and spread quickly, especially with the flammable items that fill our homes. Do you want to be caught in a fire, unprepared? Take a close read of the points below. Go over them a few times because your pet's life may be at stake.

3 Precautions To Take Before A Fire

  1. Ensure your pet's bed isn’t near any items that are highly flammable. Household items like curtains or chemicals are dangerously fast to go up in flames. Keep your pet's bed(s) near easily escapable areas, such as the front or back doors (we know this might sound crazy in day to day).
  2. Place a leash near the front door. When a fire breaks out in your home every second is crucial. By placing their leash near the door you will know exactly where to go in the frantic moments. This saves more confusion when you’re outside, trying to keep your pets close to you.
  3. Train your pet(s) with basic (but vital) commands. It’s vitally important that your pet knows basic commands like “come”. This simple but effective step will also save time when leaving the house. It may also help you avoid having to search for your pet.

3 Simple Steps To Take After The Fire

  1. Place your pet on a leash. Not only will this help them feel secure, but pets commonly try and escape when they feel stressed. Having them on a leash will reduce the risk of them running away, or getting injured outside the house.
  2. Give your pet water. It’s likely your pet will become hot and dehydrated after being around a fire. Make sure they have access to drinking water once you have left the house. This will help stop them from becoming overheated.
  3. Make sure your pet is okay. Look and feel for any burns or injuries. It is recommended that you take your pet to a local vet for a general health assessment as soon as possible.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

How to Avoid Frozen Pipes This Winter (MUST do This BEFORE Winter Comes)

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • 2 Reasons You Don’t Want Frozen Pipes in Your Family Home
  • 3 MUST DO things for your Indoor Pipes
  • 1 MUST DO and two optional things for your Outdoor Spigots

Frozen pipes costs West Virginian families hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages each year. A burst pipe can lead to a flooded basement, which leads to a potential insurance bill of over $20,000. Your actions can avoid this happening to your family home by doing some very simple actions.

First, let’s understand what can come from a frozen pipe. Don’t skip to the next section or you might miss some important information.

  1. NO RUNNING WATER. Frozen pipes mean your faucet trickles, instead of a nice flow. This can be financially dangerous as time goes on. Each time you turn on the water, the water might be backing up in the pipe and seeping into the supporting walls. Damaging them slowly and/or providing an environment for mold to thrive.
  2. EXPLODING PIPES. When our pipes freeze, a significant amount of pressure can build up between the faucet and blocked pipe. When this continues to increase, the likelihood your pipes are going to explode continues to increase. This explosion wreaks havoc in your home, from the basement to the supporting walls.

You do not want this inconvenience to happen to you or your family. This remediation process can be not only expensive but timely too. By following this checklist you will be able to dramatically minimize the likelihood of water damage from frozen pipes in your home.

  1. Keep your home warm. Turning up the heat in your house can do wonders for the pipes hidden in your walls or floors. Allowing heat into usually cold rooms will help the pipes stay frost free all winter long.
  2. Leave doors open. If you have pipes under sinks, or exposed pipes in your cabinetry, leave the doors open. This will help warmer air circulate around the pipes, and keep them warm.
  3. Switch off the water. This one is vital! Doing something as simple as turning off an unused water supply to your garden can help your outdoor pipes and hoses stay defrosted. Try to get into the habit of switching your water on outside only when you need it.

If you notice any signs of frozen pipes such as slow water, follow our tips or reach out.

4 Ways To Remove Mold WITHOUT Professional Help

9/20/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance:

  • Unattended Mold May Be Dangerous, so do this ...
  • Our simple guide to mold removal, and the maintenance of at-risk areas

Mold is a sneaky and common problem in most West Virginian households. Especially in the fall. ‘Out of sight, out of mind’ is a dangerous mentality. Simply wiping away mold will not save your property or wallet. In fact, by doing this you may be creating a bigger problem (we will show you how to avoid this soon).

Lucky for you, mold removal is safe and affordable when you know exactly how to do it. At the end of this article, you’ll feel confident enough to tackle the smelly problem yourself, and keep it away.

The Dangers & Damage of Mold

  1. Stains & Odors - Have you ever smelled that musty smell when you enter a room? That unpleasant smell that leaves guests feeling uncomfortable but most likely feeling too polite to say anything. What’s more embarrassing is that you might not even smell it anymore! In addition to this smell, the mold may have grown on the surface of cupboards, floors and walls, creating awful stains. These stains are often black or a deep yellow. While you might be able to wipe the mold off, you might be stuck with discoloured walls.
  2. Clothing Damage - Mold can appear within 24 to 48 hours. While you might only see a stain on your cupboard, mold can also migrate into your clothing. Be careful of this because replacing or repairing your mold-damaged clothing can sometimes cost over hundreds of dollars.
  3. Health Effects - Your health comes first. Not only does mold target and damage beloved items and the structure of our homes, it can also have serious effects on your health or your family’s health. Follow our easy mold removal tips below to help keep everyone, and everything safe.

Mold can be dangerous, and can be expensive to remove. But can you do it yourself? YES! (Well, to a degree). Mold removal doesn’t have to be expensive to fix if we treat the problem accordingly. So follow our helpful tips on removing mold confidently in your home.

How to Take Care of Mold WITHOUT Professional Help

  1. Wash your clothes and avoid that large shopping list! As soon as the mold is discovered do a thorough clean of your clothing. To thoroughly kill the mold, try adding vinegar or baking soda to your washer.
  2. Act Fast. If you hesitate you’ll need to mold remediate. The smallest speck of mold can create big problems. Time is your enemy and the mold’s friend. As soon as you notice a smell or stain, wipe it away and thoroughly clean the area.
  3. Water won’t help. When it comes to mold, you will need to tackle it with something stronger. Try mixing ¼ water, 2/4 baking soda and ¼ white vinegar. This strong blend will help get rid of the smell and stain.
  4. Don’t wipe, scrub! If we want this problem gone for good, we can’t just wipe it off the surface. Use a rough cloth or toothbrush to scrub the area clean.

Please note that mold often grows below the surface. It grows within the drywall, under wood and within our furniture. Cleaning this thoroughly can be extremely difficult, but if it’s not taken care of fast, the mold will continue to grow throughout your home.

The 4 Expensive Dangers of Cluttered Gutters - How You Can Easily Avoid Them in Your Home

9/14/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a Glance:

  • You will know 4 Dangers of Gutter Clutter can cause devastating damages to your home
  • You will be given 3 Easy (and free) tips on how to avoid it

Gutter clutter can create a multitude of problems for your home. It’s a silent beast that hides in your gutters, slowly creating large, expensive problems. And these problems can cost upwards of thousands of dollars of damages to your home.

While the falling leaves look beautiful this time of year, it’s what you don’t see (or think of) that creates the devastating damage to your home. Thankfully, it’s easily avoidable. When you have finished reading this article, you will be better equipped to avoid the unnecessary damages.

First, we will take you through the problems (knowing how and why is the most important part, so read thoroughly). Then we will give you 3 easy steps to follow. These 3 steps are proven to be HUGE savers (and they’re free!).

Danger 1: Damage to Home Foundations

Cluttered today, deep water damage tomorrow. Clogged gutters are infamous for causing water overflow into the foundations of properties like yours. While this doesn’t sound so bad, the water flow can cause crack foundations, weakening them, which ultimately can become a huge safety risk to you and your family.

Danger 2: Damage to Roofs

Water leaking into the roof can be an expansive problem (meaning it starts small), but the water breaches deeply into the wood and plastering. Certain structural components such as; door frames, the inside of walls, and ceilings reach a critical point quickly. This critical point results in cracks, rotting and even collapsing of the roof or walls.

Danger 3: Electricals

Electrical corrosion is a common (and often silent) problem in the homes of West Virginia. While electrical corrosion can happen from a multitude of reasons, cluttered gutters are one of the causes you must be aware of. As water overflows, leading into the roof or foundations, the moisture (or even water) will corrode electricals, and repair of these can be costly (not to mention the fire danger).

Danger 4: Creepy Crawlies

Insects and parasites love water, they love the damp and they especially love hiding spots. Gutters filled with wet leaves are their equivalent of an island paradise. Flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and termites carry many germs, into your home and creating a home for them in your gutter only brings more to your home.

(If you're unsure of insects in the home, or even want to have them gone, we recommend our local Pest Control Lamp Pestproof in Vienna).

The 3 Easy Steps to Avoid These Dangers

Follow these easy steps and the likelihood of the above dangers will dramatically decrease.

  1. Check your gutters regularly: Make it a routine to check your gutters at the beginning and end of each season. An hour or so every 3 months is worth the risk of tens of thousands of dollars of damage.
  2. Be on the look out for an unusual increase in insect activity: If you notice an increase in insects around your home, especially mosquitoes, check the state of your gutters.
  3. Maintenance of your garden and trees: Keep your trees and plants pruned. Don’t allow them to overgrow. A great suggestion is to keep this as part of the seasonal gutter check.

We hope that this has helped and you have found value. If you have any further questions please call us on 304 428 7378 or click here to contact us.

5 COVID-19 Myths Debunked: What You Can Really do to Keep Safe

8/31/2020 (Permalink)

At A Glance:

Myths Debunked

  • 5G Mobile Network Towers
  • The Age of People Who Are Infected
  • The 10-second Cough Myth
  • The Sun & Hot Weather
  • Masks & Exercise

What You Can Do

  • Vitamin D
  • Exercise
  • Eat well
  • Mask in populated areas

----------------------------------

The information floating around the internet and media outlets is becoming very hard to follow. One minute it’s yes to masks, then no, then yes again. Then it’s surfaces hold COVID, then they don’t, then they do again.

It’s hard to keep up! What’s more dangerous is the widespread myths and conspiracies that are taking over our rational thinking. We have put together 5 of the myths that we have to debunk so that we can focus on what we can do. Enjoy:

Myth 1: COVID is from 5G Towers

The online conspiracy that 5G towers are creating radiation poisoning and the government is covering up this by saying it’s a COVID-19 virus - FALSE.

The truth is that COVID-19 is a virus. Viruses cannot travel through radio waves or mobile networks. COVID-19 is a novel Coronavirus. Coronaviruses are not new. Much like influenza, each year there are new strands that mutate and COVID-19 is a new Coronavirus mutation which was originally only in specific animals, but now it has mutated to humans.

Myth 2: Coronavirus Only Affects Old People

The truth is that COVID-19 can affect and infect people of all ages. The immune system is the underlying factor of what determines the risk of fatal COVID infection. Not the patient's age.

Myth 3: The 10-Second Cough Test

The myth was that if you can hold your breath for 10 seconds without coughing you’re unlikely to have COVID.

We have no idea where this online myth appeared but sad to say it just isn’t that easy to determine whether you have COVID or not. Currently the only method to safely determine COVID infection is through an approved nasal swab test.

Myth 4: The Sun & Hot Weather

There are myths going around that the sun and hot weather fights COVID.

According to The World Health Organisation this is unfortunately an inaccurate statement. While it is still believed that UV (the light emitted directly from the sun) can kill COVID droplets immediately there are still plenty of “sunny” countries that are returning COVID numbers.

So while there are elements of (alleged) truth to this statement, we urge you to still be careful.

Myth 5: You Should Exercise with a Mask On

Exercising with a mask is actually NOT good for you or your health. Wearing a mask while exercising can limit the ability to breathe comfortably. As sweat builds up in the mask, it can become wet and stick to your mouth, making it harder to breathe.

WHO advises not to wear masks while exercising.

What Can You Do?

Build Your Immune System!

With everything happening with this pandemic it has been a wake up to all of us and the great importance our immune system plays in fighting off disease (and viruses). Here are some ways that you can boost your immune system: (we are not medical advisors, we urge you see a doctor to confirm these)

  • Take Vitamin D supplements (our body needs this and supplementation is the best form)
  • Vitamin C supplementation
  • Exercise regularly
  • Improved eating: add leafy greens and vegetables to every lunch and dinner.
    • remove sugar from your diet as much as possible.

Wear A Mask In Populated Areas

Masks help reduce the risk of cross-infection. When going to highly populated areas such as shopping malls or restaurants we advise wearing a mask.

3 SERVPRO Tips to Avoid Crippling Storm Damage Expenses in Wood Country

8/17/2020 (Permalink)

Article at a glance: The goal of this article is to give you information on how to avoid storm damage to your home. If successful, this information could save you and your family $10,000+ in damages.

The Damage that Storms Cause

The storms that hit Wood County in June this year had caused multiple family homes a lot of damage. From structural damage to flooding or trees falling onto roofs. It is hard for the team at SERVPRO to see this because it’s very hard to explain the requirements to fix the damage.

It is an expensive endeavor. From removal of debris, water damage restoration and all other requirements it is not uncommon for insurance bills to reach $10,000 to $20,000+. In this article we will give a short description of some options for you to do do avoid the damage and we will link to the full, detailed blog post for you to read further. Please read these carefully and apply. It could save you a lot of money and a lot of stress.

Beware of Nearby Trees

Trees are one of the biggest causes of home destruction during storms. They can either act as lighting rods, attracting lightning to the home or tree, or, in strong winds, trees can become an airborne projectile to cause damage to your home.

Are there any areas that could create major leaks?

Waters ability to expand and penetrate all areas, big and small, means that if it gets in (particularly during a storm) it creates long lasting issues that only get worse in time.

It is important to check (perhaps every 3 months) for any possible areas of the home’s exterior that may give access to water to come in. You can do this personally, but the more recommended method would to have a professional look for you. This ensures that you are thorough. Professionals know where to look for, how to look and, if found, what is needed to resolve the issue in the most effective and cost-effective way for you.

Have the Proper Insurances

Please, this is by far the most important. As mentioned, storm damages can be very expensive. No family should have to go through the heartache of having for dish out tens of thousands of hard earned dollars to fix their home. Storm insurance will help ease the heartache in these times. It won’t make it easy, but it will make it easier. It’s the best we can ask for.

3 Ways Storm Damage Will Close Your Business Indefinitely - How to Avoid It During (And After) COVID

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

The economic impacts from Coronavirus has put unprecedented strain on local businesses. With storms hitting the Parkersburg, WV area in June as well, a few local businesses have been possibly affected forever. We want all local businesses to survive through this, so please read this post carefully.

There are 3 major ways that the damage affected these businesses and this article will equip you with how to keep afloat.

3 Ways Home Fires Start in the Laundry Room (and how to Avoid them)

7/27/2020 (Permalink)

While rare, laundry room fires have effected numerous families in Parkersburg, WV over the past years. These fires may start small but within minutes laundry fires can grow and take over the entire house, taking away all your possessions. No family deserves this. Let’s look at what you can do to minimize (and hopefully neutralize) the chance of this ever happening in your home.

3 Ways Fires Start In The Laundry

  • Blocked Filters and Vents: Over time, the vents and filters of the dryer may get blocked. The heat inside the dryer does not get released as there is no way out. In this way, the temperature may cause the lint to catch fire.
  • Leaving Moist Clothes in the Hot Dryer: Clothes such as towels or bed sheets, etc. may take longer to get dry. After washing the clothes, leaving these damp items inside the dryer is very risky. The dryer is hot, so leaving the clothes inside for too long can start a fire in the laundry.
  • Washing Fabrics at Higher Temperatures: All fabrics cannot be washed at high temperatures. Normally people wash all of their fabrics at the same temperature and this can lead to problems. It is important to note that some fabrics, especially cotton fabrics, need to be washed at relevantly lower temperatures than others. We advise keeping an eye on the temperature while washing different types of clothes together.

How to Avoid Fire Damage:

Here is how you can avoid a laundry fire starting regarding the three points above:

  • Blocked Filters and Vents: Check the filters after every wash. Most dryers have a very easy method of cleaning out the filters. By making it common practice (it literally takes seconds!) you are dramatically minimizing the chances of fire damage occurring.
  • Leaving Moist Clothes in the Hot Dryer: After each wash empty it fully. This might sound silly but even leaving a sock in there may create a chance of issues arising.
  • Washing Fabrics at Higher Temperatures: Look at the guidelines on the tag of the clothing you are washing. If they are suggesting a cold wash, please do this!

Bonus note: Only use the dryer when you are at home. Never use the clothes dryer when you are out of home, even if you are quickly running to the store.

Preventions are always better than a cure. By following the instructions mentioned above, you can easily avoid the possibility of laundry fire.

In the horrible event any fires start please call 911 immediately.

We hope this has helped,

5 Way Mold Grows in West Virginian Homes (and how to Prevent It)

7/20/2020 (Permalink)

West Virginian summers are mostly humid with an average temperature of 46 °F, and this can be prime for mold to grow.

Mold belongs to the fungus family. It is not the mold you see that is the issue, instead it is the mold spores that are in the air. When inhaled, the spores may cause health effects such as irritations and allergies.

What Causes Mold to Grow In My Home?

Mold colonies need certain environments to grow best. If you can avoid or minimize these you will be able to potentially avoid mold growths in your home. The 5 things that benefit mold growths are:

  • Humidity This is the first and foremost factor contributing to the growth of mold. Mold being a living organism that feeds on moisture. A little exposure to a leaking pipe, heat moving through the home or even a clothes dryer in an enclosed space can create moisture in the air and this can quickly give birth to mold colonies in this area of your home.
  • Darkness Mold thrives in the dark and quiet places where ultraviolet rays cannot prevent it from growing. Mold flourishes in the dark nooks and corners of the house where sunlight is unable to reach.
  • Warmth The outdoor temperature of West Virginia ranges from 25°F-82°F, whereas a mold requires 60°F to grow with full swing. So, it should come as no surprise that the warmth inside of the your home can become a breeding ground for mold due to humidity and moisture created by the differing temperatures from inside to outside.
  • Oxygen Like all other living beings, mold feeds on oxygen. The combination of warmth, moisture and oxygen in areas such as your home basement or bathrooms create a feeding ground for mold.
  • Food Mold needs food to thrive. The question is, what does mold eat? Well, it can be your drywall, meat, and wood to name a few. Black toxic mold is fond of cellulose, which is commonly found in wood and paper (your walls).

How Do You Prevent Mold From Growing?

Now that we know the common reasons behind mold growth, we can equip ourselves with mold remediation methods to minimize (or even remove) the ability for mold to grow.

Here is how to prevent mold from taking over your house in a few convenient steps;

  • To Avoid Humidity: a constant air flow decreases humidity. An exhaust fan is the simplest way to do this. Install an exhaust fan in your bathroom(s), kitchen and basement and use them whenever heat is present (for example, a hot shower or bath, cooking or hot water system is on in the basement).
  • Other methods to improve air flow are:
    • Keep Basement tidy. A build up of items can minimize or restrict airflow. If water or moisture becomes present in any area of the basement you are likely to be feeding the mold now with stagnant air.
  • Clean and dry every moist surface areas across your house.
  • Frequently check pipes for blockages. This is a similar rule to the exhaust fans.
  • Make use of mold killing products for cleaning the bathrooms, tubs, and sinks.
  • Immediately dispose of materials infected with mold.
  • In the extreme case of mold accumulation or possibly even black toxic mold, please seek professional advice because the high amount of mold may cause health problems. Your safety and heath is priority.

If you want any more questions answered or even would like us to have a look at your mold issues and see if we can help further, please call us right now on 304-428-7378 or contact us through our form by clicking here.

We hope this has helped.

3 Common Ways Kitchen Fires Start, and how to Avoid Them in West Virginia

7/7/2020 (Permalink)

A wok with noodles inside and flames all around it Kitchen Fires Happen Often, Please be Prepared

Fire damages everything that comes in its way, from tall buildings to small living rooms. The tendency of specific things to catch fire may increase or decrease, depending on the situation and the availability of fire-causing elements. These elements include heat, oxygen, and fuel, and they are mostly present in kitchens, making kitchens more vulnerable to catch fire in West Virginia.

How Kitchen Fire Starts in West Virginia:

Kitchen fires may start because of multiple reasons, but three of the most common are:

  • People leave kitchens unattended before they sleep. After use, the burner remains hot for a long time, so different combustibles such as food packaging, towel, rags, etc. can easily catch fire if near the recently used burner.
  • Leakage of gas, cooking oil, or other combustible elements can cause a fire. Even the wooden cabinets and doors can become risky at times, especially when the kitchen is small.
  • Kitchen fires may also start by accidentally turning on the equipment. If microwave ovens, burners, or other cooking equipment are not turned off by mistake, they can cause colossal fire damage in your kitchen.

Numerous other factors cause kitchen fire; however, people must avoid the factors mentioned above to stay safe as they are observed most commonly in West Virginia.

How to Avoid Fire Damage In The Kitchen:

Several measures need to be taken before you go for fire damage restoration. The following are a few of them.

  • Try to clean your kitchen and pots before you leave. A clean kitchen is always secured and has minimal chance of catching fire.
  • Always pay your full attention while cooking the food and handling the hot basins. A minor mistake, such as a hanging towel, can catch fire from the stove.
  • Don’t leave bowls, plates and food scattered in your kitchen.
  • Always use a clean pot to make your food hot in the microwave, and make sure the pan is balanced to avoid falling over.
  • Pay special attention to combustible materials, including cooking oil, towels, and rags, etc.
  • Keep your garbage can clean and don’t throw any hot items inside the can. Food packaging, plastics, and other materials can catch fire.
  • Never let your children come near to the stove.
  • Don't ask children to handle pots, especially when they are hot.
  • Switch off all unnecessary items and disconnect the gas connection before you leave the kitchen in the night.
  • If you can smell gas, never turn any electric switch on. The spark created inside the switch while turning it on can instantly cause a fire.

Conclusion:

Despite conducting all the safety measures, we still need to stay alert as fires can start at any time and due to any reason. If you experience a kitchen fire in West Virginia, you should try to overcome it only when you are confident to do so. If the fire is out of control call 911 immediately and once the fire has been smothered by the Pakersburg Fire Department please immediately call SERVPRO for fire damage restoration. The SERVPRO team of professionals will help clean up and removed damaged items.

Please take all precautions mentioned above so that the chance of needing us is as minimal as possible.

How to Stop People Vandalising Your Walls with Graffiti in Wood County

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

corrugated metal walls with graffiti all over them Graffiti attracts more graffiti artists

A wall with graffiti attracts more graffiti. It’s counter intuitive to what we think but it’s the reality. When someone who is likely to graffiti sees a wall with someone else’s graffiti, they know that they can do it there. They know that someone else has gotten away with it and just like a lighthouse on the shore it calls them in to the safe area to vandalise.

Graffiti not only attracts more vandals but it deters customers and can have a significantly negative effect on the neighbourhood as well. While we know that most business owners do not have the resources for professional graffiti removal there are methods that you can do yourself that will clean the walls and glass up, but please be careful of the warning we will give below.

PLEASE NOTE THAT GRAFFITI REMOVAL IS A VERY TIME HEAVY JOB. THERE IS NO FAST METHOD WITHOUT TEARING DOWN THE WALL.

How to Remove Graffiti on Glass

Because the glass is a very flat and non-porous surface it is possible to remove the paint with a razor blade. Scrape the razor blade behind the paint so that you can peel it off. The addition of a paint thinner can also make it easier to remove the paint.

Once completed, rinse off the window and it’s back to normal.

Things to be mindful of with Graffiti on Glass

Do not apply too much pressure to the window. You do not want it to break.

Be aware of the razor blade. If you scratch the window you cannot remove the scratch.

How to Remove Graffiti on Brick Walls

Brick walls are porous. This means that the paint can seep into the brick, making it much harder to remove thoroughly.

  1. First you want to get a hard bristled brush, paint stripper, safety goggles and a mask.
  2. Now you want to apply the paint stripper generously over the graffiti, starting at a top corner, working outward and down.
  3. Wait the recommended time given by the paint stripper.
  4. Now, starting at the same corner, use the stiff-bristled brush to scrap as much of the paint off as possible. Note: there is likely to be a lot of flakes and chunks coming off so wear your mask.
  5. Wash the wall with hot or warm water. Use rags to do a thorough job of removing any left over pieces.
  6. Reapply another layer of paint stripper to remove any stubborn areas of paint. Wait. Scrub and rinse again. (You may have to repeat this cycle a few times to thoroughly remove the graffiti).

What to Avoid

Do not use pressure washers to remove the paint from the brick walls. Pressure washers can quickly corrode the bricks, causing potential structural integrity issues in the wall. This can be very dangerous and / or very expensive.

How to Remove Graffiti from a Painted Wall

When your vandalised wall has been previously painted there is a danger of having the paint damaged in the removal process. Follow the tips above but be mindful of applying the paint stripper ONLY on the graffiti. This will be more time consuming but please know that there is a chance of effecting the paint underneath the graffiti if proper, professional attention is administered.

How to Remove Graffiti From Metal

Thankfully all you have to do is follow the steps in the brick wall above. And this will be much easier.

There you have it!

The major issue with graffiti removal is the time. It’s a very time consuming endeavour but an important, time sensitive thing to be done. Because they longer that it is put off, the more graffiti it will attract.

How You Can Avoid $1,000s in Damages with Crawlspace Waterproofing

6/15/2020 (Permalink)

a home being built, exposing the structural support with plastic sheets covering everything Encapsulation Helps Avoid Water Damage

Water and Mold Damage causes $100,000s in damages to homes and businesses in Parkersburg, WV and surrounding areas each year. This damage can come from an array of different scenarios such as Storm Damage, spigot flooding or water heater bursts. Now here’s another area for water damage that you can prepare for and avoid A LOT of heartache: Crawlspace Water Proofing.

What is Crawlspace Water Proofing?

The crawlspace is the area of limited height under the floor or above the roof. This area gives access to wiring and plumbing.

Why is this important for waterproofing?

Your crawlspace can collect water from many ways such as small leaks or moisture build up. When this build up occurs you start developing mold or water damage that weakens the structural integrity of your home or business.

Waterproofing through encapsulation stops the water from penetrating or absorbing into the structural components.

What is Encapsulation?

Encapsulation is a process that uses 12mm thick sheets of poly to cover the surfaces such as walls, flooring and ground. This poly (thick plastic) acts as a non-penetratable surface, stopping water from absorbing into the surfaces. If the water absorbed into the surface it can deteriorate the structural integrity of your home and/or create toxic black mold. If this was to happen damages can be well above $20,000 in damages depending on how early you capture it.

Why Prevention is always cheaper than Cure

As we mention in all of these blogs, your prevention will always be much cheaper than fixing the problem when it occurs. Think of it like this:

  • You notice you have a problem
  • You call someone to look at it
  • They notice there’s been a build up of water and mold, now you need to have this resolved.
  • You need to pay over $20,000 in structure rehabilitation, as well as mold remediation (could be anything from $1,000-$10,000) to make your home free from mold.
  • You are now concerned about it happening again, so you will get encapsulation to save yourself from future problems.

Now lets look at the prevention option:

  • You pay for the encapsulation.
  • You don’t have the issue of water damages or mold surprising you.

In the second option, you’re now saving a lot of money, heart aches and headaches.

Please, save yourself from the heartaches and headaches. Life is short and we at SERVPRO would love for you to not need to call us to solve water damages or mold.

Keep safe!

5 Things In West Virginia Storms to Be Aware Of to Avoid $10,000s in Damages

5/25/2020 (Permalink)

A fallen tree that has torn up the road and landed on a family home $10,000 of Damage in under 12 Hours

If Coronavirus has taught us anything it’s that we should be prepared for what can (or may) go wrong in life. While Coronavirus is perhaps a one in a lifetime event, major storms are common to West Virginia, even in the Summertime.

Unfortunately it’s often not until too late that we are reminded of how expensive storms can be to family homes and commercial buildings. This late response often leads to well over $10,000 of damages and a heartbreaking outcome that can devastate a family or business (or both!).

So that you can be best prepared to avoid, or a least minimise, the damage that may be caused by a storm, we have put together 4 major things to look out for so that you can be prepared and avoid (or minimise) the heart break.

Beware of Trees Near Your Home

Are there any large trees near your home? If they fell would your home be in potential danger? If heat lightning struck would your home be in danger of the tree being on fire?

These are all very important questions to ask right now because it can be dealt with now. Remember: it’s easy to do it now. It will be harder to deal with it when it’s lying in your living room.

Call a local arborist (tree surgeon) to evaluate the likely danger and they can help you with the best line of attack. Here are a few in the local Parkersburg Area:

Nova Tree Solutions, LLC (Parkersburg & Vienna, WV)

Kiddler’s Tree Services (Marietta, OH)

Are There Any Areas That Could Create Major Leaks?

Water is a very invasive liquid that easily causes tens of thousands of dollars worth in damages within no time. Water damage can be very frustrating because it lingers. It seeps into furniture, walls and carpets, and unless eradicated professionally it can open up breeding grounds for mold.

What to do:

Conduct a proper check of your home. Are there any areas in the roof that may be a high risk of leaking and leading to attic flooding (which can lead to ceiling damage and other structural damage)? Are there any areas around the edges of your home that may result in a basement flooding?

You can either do this on your own, or ask a professional to come and look. A professional will know what to look for, because sometimes all that is needed is a small crack that can turn into a large hole after a storm.

Power Outages

This is a common one that most of us are prepared for and thankfully not a major one of concern.

What to do:

Basically; be prepared. Have some flashlights, food and warm blankets on the ready.

Move all Loose Items and Furniture Inside

If there is a storm warning please do this immediately. We cannot tell you how many times we are called out after a storm because something small has blown through a window or wall of a family home or business. Hundreds, if not thousands of damage from water damage and/or broken items that could have been easily avoided.

What to do:

Please, immediately move all these item indoors, away from wind.

Have the Proper Insurances

Prevention is always better than cure. We agree, at times a lot of people don’t like “the insurance companies” but they’re so important to stick on the side of caution: “it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”

Everything is a risk verses reward system in this world and there are risks to our homes that (statistically) are more unlikely to happen than to happen. But the question of “what if” is always there.

We at SERVPRO always urge our community to lean towards being safer. Lean towards risk reduction because we see what happens when families are not prepared for the worst. It can be devastating.

What to do:

Investigate all insurance companies and their various policies. You can reduce your premium by increasing your excess for example.

It’s very important that you know all the aspects of your insurance as well. Some contain exclusions that may effect you and if the time comes that you need to claim, you do not want to be under an exclusion clause. Please be careful. There’s risk in not having insurance, but also risk in having the wrong insurance.

We hope that this has helped shed some light into the importance of preparing. Because prior preventions prevents poor performance (outcomes). Reduce the risk and enjoy the rewards it brings.

Stay safe,

Can I Clean My House for Coronavirus?

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Coronavirus molecule next to a cartoon of a house on a hill Keep the home Coronavirus-free

We have been receiving a lot of questions about Coronavirus in the Mid-Ohio Valley and Parkersburg, WV in the past weeks. Particularly about how to clean the family homes to be safe.

How to Clean Your House Yourself

Sterilization is ultimately the safest method to go with such an unknown virus like COVID-19 (the novel Coronavirus). Based on the World Health Organization, there are also some home methods you can do to keep yourself safer.

(Please note that these methods do not ensure 100% removal of the Coronavirus from your home. It does, however, improve the safety in your home).

Methods to clean:

  1. Sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol.
  2. Hot soapy water
  3. Disinfectant

Places to clean:

  1. Areas in the home that are frequently touched i.e. door knobs/handles, microwave oven door etc. Anywhere where hands are touching numerous times during the day.
  2. Flat metal surfaces. These surfaces catch the droplets and are believed to be able to sit here for hours (some CDC cases believe days).
  3. Shopping bags etc. Because your bags are coming from the local shops it is best practice to clean the bags before they enter your home. Sanitizer spray or disinfectant is the best practice.

Get The Full Sanitization Deal

If these above options are not enough for you, SERVPRO offer full sterilization of your family home. Our team will thoroughly sterilize your home with child and animal safe products to ensure that your home is proactively cleaned for COVID-19.

For detailed information about how we do it, please click here to read our detailed article.

Thank you and keep safe,

Full Sterilisation for Coronavirus for Homes and Businesses

4/15/2020 (Permalink)

two SERVPRO staff in hazmat suits, masks and goggles Your Safety Is Our Priority

COVID-19 (the novel coronavirus) has taken over the world because of it’s highly contagious nature and it’s ability to stay on surfaces for extended periods of times. Some have reported hours, some have reported days at a time.

The virus’s ability to move and spread is what has the entire American nation on lock down. It can travel from someone’s hands to clothes to the kitchen counter. It could have travelled all the way from the local Sam’s Club to your garage. We urge that you are very careful, please. Be diligent with your sanitisation, what you touch and keeping a safe social distance of 6 feet.

Some families in the local Wood County have contacted us asking if we do home or business sterilisation and we wanted to explain our processes in full with this blog post.

We offer cleaning for all options:

  1. Pre-cautionary Cleaning
  2. Suspected Contamination
  3. Confirmed Contamination

The Sterilization Process

Our process is very thorough and detailed to ensure safety is of a high quality. One of our owners, Jay Miller, is very concerned about the safety of his family. One of his immediate family members is of high risk to COVID-19. For this reason you can be assured his team is acting in the highest of safety measures in your job and outside.

The process is:

  • Our staff quarantine the areas of the home or business before beginning sterilization.
  • Our staff are fully covered with safety suits, goggles and masks.
  • Any heavy items are moved for easier access.
  • Sterilization happens, all items are wiped down and sprayed.
  • A period of time must pass afterwards to ensure that the area is safe to re-enter. This duration is determined on the size of the area and the items within the area.

Once the entire home or business has been successfully sterilized you may re-enter. Please note that if someone enters the premises at a later date and they are infected, the location may require further sterilization.

How much does Full Coronavirus Sterilization Cost?

There are multiple factors that will dictate the price of a full sterilization of your home or business. These factors include (but not limited to):

  • total square footage
  • labor required
  • location
  • type of facility

A typical quotation of sterilization is:

  1. Proactive (or precautionary) cleaning: Typically $0.30 - $0.50 per sq. ft.
  2. Suspected or confirmed contamination: Typically $0.75 - $1.25 per sq. ft.
  3. If heavy contents are present and require moving: Add $0.50 - $0.75 per sq. ft.

These quoted prices are for the sterilization only. Additional costs, including travel distance and labor required may influence the price.

Your family and the family of others are our priority. Together we can keep the community safe from Coronavirus.

If you would like to get a quote please call 304-428-7378 to speak with someone now.

Please keep safe and we hope that this helped.

3 Myths about the Coronavirus

Social Distancing - What is it? And why is it important?

Sublimation - Why it is the Best Way to Dry Vital Documents?

4/13/2020 (Permalink)

important paperwork with water on them Be very careful what you do when drying documents

How do you dry Vital Documents? Do you have some vital documents that have just been ruined or dampened by water? Are you concerned that this information may be lost? Are you hoping it’s salvageable?

Sublimation is the process of making water transform directly from solid (ice) straight to gas (condensation or air). It skips being liquid water entirely.

Skipping being liquid is extremely important because it can re-damage the documents when thawed. This is because the water can streak the ink or pull apart the paper or material.

Sublimation is approved by the National Archives and Records Administration and General Services Administration.

Do This First to Your Wet Documents

Freeze them immediately:

Freezing halts the destruction of the paper. It won’t undo any damage but it will press the pause button because bacteria and mold cannot grow on it when in a freezing environment.

This will work on wet client files, wet family photos or wet posters. Be careful with the documents. If possible lie them flat and separated.

If SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties is required we will transport the paper in its frozen state to our document restoration centre.

SERVPRO Document Restoration Services - Beyond Drying

In addition to simply drying documents our Documentation Restoration Services we can decontaminate and digitize.

Document Decontamination: Sometimes documents can be exposed to hazardous conditions such as a sewage spill. In these instances it is very important that the contaminants are cleared, while still keeping papers in tact as best as possible. SERVPRO can provide this.

Digitization of Documents: Back up files are important. All salvageable documents can be digitized as a back up if you or your office wishes to do so. This will help avoid any future issues and an optional service.

Most importantly, we and all members of the document restoration team are HIPPA Master Certified, which means that patient records and private information are in a secure chain of custody while they are being restored.

How Our Staff Are Keeping Safe with Coronavirus with CDC Guidelines

4/10/2020 (Permalink)

Our staff are the back bone and heart of our company and it is important that their safety is our primary focus. If they are safe, so are you.

As per the request and guidance of The Centres of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) we have been, and will continue to, undergo the following protocols to keep everyone safe.

  • Pre-Screening: Employers are measuring the employee’s temperature and assessing symptoms prior to starting work. Where possible, temperature checks are happening before the staff enter the facility.
  • Regular Monitoring: As long as the employee doesn’t have a temperature or display symptoms, they are self-monitoring under the supervision of the SERVPRO health program.
  • Wearing a Mask: The employees are wearing face masks at all times while in the workplace for 14 days after last possible exposure for extra precaution. Employers either are issuing face masks or approving employees’ supplied cloth face coverings in the event of shortages.
  • Social Distancing: The employee are maintaining 6 feet apart and practice social distancing as work duties permit in the workplace.
  • Disinfecting and Cleaning work spaces: We are cleaning and disinfecting all areas such as offices, bathrooms, common areas, shared electronic equipment routinely.

What if the Employees Become Sick During The Day?

If the employee becomes sick during the day, they are sent home immediately. Surfaces in their workspace are immediately cleaned and disinfected again in co-ordinance of the CDC recommended practices.

Information on persons who had contact with the ill employee during the time the employee had symptoms and 2 days prior to symptoms will be compiled and notified. Others at the facility with close contact within 6 feet of the employee during this time are considered to be exposed.

ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS WE ARE TAKING

  • We do not share headsets or other objects that are near mouth or nose.
  • We have increase the frequency of cleaning commonly touched surfaces.
  • We do not consider pilot testing the use of face masks to ensure they do not interfere with work assignments.
  • We do not work with facility maintenance staff which will minimize air exchanges in room.
  • We physically distance when taking breaks. In addition we are stagger breaks and do not congregate in any room.

We hope that this has brought some ease.

3 Myths About COVID-19 (the Novel Coronavirus)

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

a computer rendition of the coronavirus molecule COVID-19 has many myths surrounding it.

Today feels a little surreal to a lot of us. With international travel being halted around the world, some borders being closed off and some cities experiencing full lock-downs to contain the feared virus, known as COVID-19, there are so many questions, conspiracy theories and concerns surrounding the entire world, particularly our state, West Virginia.

Please note information compiled in this blog post is gathered only from the World Health Organisation and the CDC. It is our utmost priority for everyone in our local area of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties to be informed and not fearful. This is a time for us to work together as a community.

This blog article attempts to inform our local community because information is powerful and we aim to put some myths at rest.

Myth 1: COVID-19 is not new, it’s a government created virus.

It is true that the name Coronavirus is not new. In fact Coronavirus is the name for a strand of viruses. Just like the flu, there are multiple strands of Coronavirus, some that are only within the animal kingdom and some that are human coronaviruses. All past reported versions of human coronaviruses (including SARS-CoV) are controlled through either vaccine or other reasons.

Yes, COVID-19 is new, contrary to many people’s concerns of this being used as some government ploy or other ulterior motive. The COVID-19 is believed to have mutated from a human consuming an animal (not a bat, which is the popular online narrative at the moment), most likely from an animal called a Pangolin (as many experts suggest). The virus which was known by scientists to be within the animal kingdom but not dangerous to humans took on a mutation in late 2019, which allowed it to spread human to human.

So please remember this when people are sharing photos or videos online of disinfectants that include “human coronavirus” on the back of their labels or television shows referencing the coronavirus: Human Coronavirus is not new, but the strand of COVID-19 is.

Please remember our goal with this is information. Through information and knowledge we, as a community, can work together through this time.

Myth 2: Coronavirus Only Affects Old People

COVID-19 does not discriminate. No matter your race or age it will attempt to get to you. But do not be overly concerned, be informed. While you may not be a high risk of the worst case scenario it is important to consider those close to you: your family, friends and work colleagues who may be at high risk.

This global event is financially hurting so many Americans, but it is important to remember what is truly important, our health and the health of others. So please, be mindful of how to act during this crazy time in our lives.

Again, please remember our goal with this is information. Through information and knowledge we, as a community, can work together through this time.

Myth 3: It’s Just Like The Common Flu

This myth must be included because it makes a lot of people very complacent about the Coronavirus. Our goal is for the community to work together and therefore this myth must be shown.

COVID-19 has an array of ways it effects the human body, while yes, the majority of people will experience mild symptoms such as fever, being lethargic, coughing or even no symptoms at all! It’s important for us to remember the larger, more difficult symptoms that other may experience. This includes experiencing pneumonia (the inability to breathe fully for perhaps up to a few days - some have described it as “a feeling of drowning for days”). While the chances of people experiencing this and/or being hospitalised are much lower, it is still important to think about everyone in our community.

By practicing social distancing and proper hygiene of washing hands and sanitising, we can help avoid spreading it to (or receiving it from) others.

FINAL THOUGHT: PLEASE DO THIS

Please, we at SERVPRO urge you and everyone in the community, to do our part in helping slow down the spread of this virus. We are in the greatest country in the world because we work together, we come together in times of turmoil and this is our opportunity to do our part.

It is a tough time for so many of us, financially and with the frequent rule changes and fear running through so many families in America now. What we can do is work together, do our part and defeat this virus by not letting it spread.

God Bless America, you who is reading this, your family and the families around the world.

(Please share the link to this article on your social media to help spread information instead of misleading, fear inducing information. Through proper information we can help reduce the fear, anger and other negative emotions. We are a community.)

Social Distancing - What is it and Why is it Important?

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

a male holding out his hand showing he wants his friends to stay away The crew at The AO House keeping their distance

There is a new buzz term flying around the media and internet: Social Distancing. It’s even becoming temporary law with some states and other countries imposing fines or even jail time for disobeying it. But why is this so important?

What is Social Distancing?

Social distancing is the act of keeping a safe distance away from everyone to avoid spreading of a disease. This has been determined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as 1.5 meters (or 6 feet). Viruses such as the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spread through droplets from coughs, sneezes or even exhaling. For this reason the American government, working alongside WHO, have administered this rule nationwide.

Please remember our goal with this is information. Through information and knowledge we, as a community, can work together through this time. Don’t be fearful, be informed.

Why Has the Government Administered Social Distancing?

The goal of social distancing is to slow down the spread of COVID-19 so that our hospitals can handle the number of severe cases. This strand of the Coronavirus is highly contagious and therefore it spreads extremely quickly from person to person.

The reason for trying to slow down the spread of COVID-19 is so that they can “slow the curve”. If you haven’t heard this term before it refers to the number of people catching COVID-19.

Why Are We “Slowing The Curve”?

Life is precious. Coronavirus has a high hospitalisation rate compared to other known viruses including the common flu. This combined with it being highly contagious means that there is a likely chance of our hospitals being overcrowded. This means that it is possible that there may not be enough beds, or doctors and nurses to treat the extreme cases of COVID-19. But by slowing down the curve, we can hope to stretch it out, so that as people get better, more beds open up and more lives can be saved!

Please remember our goal with this is information. Through information and knowledge we, as a community, can work together through this time. Don’t be fearful, be informed.

OUR FINAL THOUGHT: PLEASE DO THIS

We at SERVPRO, please urge you and everyone in the community to keep to the social distancing guidelines given by WHO and the American government. It is our responsibility as citizens to work together, keeping our friends and family safe. This is a small price to pay to keep one another healthy.

Please share this article link with friends and family on your socials. There is power in education and information and we can work through this together.

Please do not be fearful, just be informed.

Symptoms and Advice for Avoiding COVID-19 (the Novel Coronavirus)

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

computer rendering of the coronavirus molecule It's Important to be informed, but not alarmed.

With so much information being shared on the internet (both correct and incorrect) we wanted to make sure that our community in Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties were reading the correct information about COVID-19.

Our information is gathered through only validated sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

Information helps our community and it is important that you (and us) keep informed by the proper authorities.

So here are the best practices we can do to minimise the chance of catching Coronavirus, according to WHO. (Please note that this doesn’t not 100% guarantee not getting COVID-19, but these practices will help reduce the likelihood).

Best Practices:

  1. Sterilize your hands before and after touching surfaces when outside of your home. COVID-19 is spread through droplets from an infected person. Droplets come from coughing, sneezing or even exhaling onto someone. These droplets can fall onto surfaces such as doorhandles, counter tops, pens or any other surface. It is believed by the CDC that the virus can live on this surface from anywhere between 3 to 9 days (more information is being collected daily as the CDC do more testing). Therefore it is important to use an alcohol-based sanitiser (70% or more is ideal) and thoroughly clean your hands.
  2. Wash your hands with hot, soapy water when entering and exiting your home. It is important to do this method when at home to keep it different to just sanitising your hands. This will keep the sanitisation different so that the virus is not able to adapt.
  3. Avoid touching your face (particularly your mouth, nose and eyes) COVID-19 is a respiratory virus. This means that it sits in your throat until it moves down to your lungs. Therefore it is important to avoid transporting the virus from your hands to your face. If you have an itch that needs to go, try itching your face with the inside of your shirt if possible.
  4. Avoid close contact with people (social distancing) Social distancing is important because that extra space makes it harder for the COVID-19 virus to travel to you.
  5. When coughing or sneezing use the inside of your elbow. We use our hands for everything, from catching a cough or sneeze to grabbing everything. By sneezing or coughing into your arm it will significantly minimise the chance of it spreading. (Please remember that you may have it and not know as some people who get COVID do not display any symptoms and are at no risk to themselves, but may be to others who are at high risk).

Please remember our goal with this article is to provide honest information. Through information and knowledge we, as a community, can work together through this time. Do not be fearful, be informed.

Symptom of COVID-19

According to WHO the symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  1. Fever
  2. A dry cough
  3. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  4. Abnormal feeling of being lethargic (tired physically).

As suggested by the World Health Organisation if you are experiencing mild symptoms please do not leave your home. Please stay at home until these symptoms disappear. If they get worse, please notify someone immediately or call 911.

How to Fix a Seized Sump Pump: This Simple Act Could Save you Thousands of Dollars in Damages

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

A flooded Sump Pump in Vienna, West Virginia This Sump Pump is About to Flood the Basement!

A seized up Sump Pump can cost a home owner thousands upon thousands of dollars in damage. Some of this can be unrecoverable (unique items that cannot be replaced by money).

Imagine the time and money it would take to repair a flooded basement. Would it be worth it when you know it could have been avoided by one simple, routine check a year? Definitely not.

Each year during winter our team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties are called with families and business owners that suffer avoidable basement flooding from seized up Sump Pumps.

This is easily avoidable with one routine check each year. This takes merely minutes.

First we will briefly explain what a sump pump is and why it is important. If you already know what it is, please jump to the next heading.

What is a Sump Pump?

A sump pump removes excess water in a water-collecting sump basin and are typically found in basements.

A sump pump often is used to drain water from the perimeter drains of a basement waterproofing system. It funnels water that is above the foundation of the house away from the home into a municipal storm drain or dry wall.

Why do a Routine Check for you Sump Pump?

Sump Pumps are known to seize up during the summer because the are not typically used then. This becomes a problem in the winter months when excess water is drained into the sump pump.

When the sump pump is seized up the excess water is very likely to build up fast in the sump pump drain and overflow into the basement.

Now, because the sump pumps primary job is to remove excess water from the basement you now effectively have a plug in the sump pump. The flood water only continues to rise.

No you have a real problem.

How to Check for a Seized Up Sump Pump

Checking to see if your sump pump has seized up is very simple and should be a routine each year, around a month before the winter months.

Step 1: Locate your Sump Pump The sump pump is often found in one of the corners of the basement. It will be a pump leading into a hole, often covered by a black lid.

Step 2: Make sure that the sump pump is turned on Sound silly, but this is a very important part.

Step 3: Pour some water into it Your primary goal is to make sure that your sump pump has not seized up over the summer months. If the water continues to build up with no display of the water being pumped away you may have a seized up sump pump.

Step 4: How to Unseize the Sump Pump Surprisingly this is usually done by a simple shake of the pipe and pump (see the video below for how). This will jolt the sediment build up allowing for the sump pump to pump freely.

Step 5: Test Two More Times Once the water begins to pump out through the sump pump, it's important to test two more times to fully clean out the sump pump.

Fill the hole up a few more times and allow the sump pump to do what's it's made for ... to pump water. This is important to make sure that the sediment won't build up in the next few months.

Final Step: Watch the Video Our co-owner, Steven Seckman, was demonstrating how to do this and realised that his own sump pump had seized up.

Even our owners sometimes forget! Luckily he may have avoided the water damage. You will learn from his lesson brought unto himself and further see how easy it is to fix a very expensive problem before it happens.

We hope that this blog post has been helpful. If you could share this on your social media pages that would be a huge help to spread the word so that others can avoid the painful flooding of a basement.

NOTICE: Barbeque Grilling a Major Factor in Home and Apartment Fires and How to Avoid Them

3/3/2020 (Permalink)

A cartoon of a man with a red apron on smiling, standing next to a barbeque grill, holding food in his left hand Let's Keep the Fire on the Grill

Barbeque grills are a leading cause of fires according to the National Fire Protection Association. Typically these fires are more likely to happen on balconies and porches of apartment blocks however it is also necessary to know the safety precautions if you barbeque at your home.

How Do I Avoid Starting a BBQ Fire?

  • Keep the grill a minimum of 15 feet away from any over hang. This is to ensure that smoke can escape freely and also minimises the risk of any heat being trapped and potentially starting a fire.
  • Store the grill a minimum of 5 feet away from all over hangs. It is most likely easiest to keep the barbeque at the same location (15 feet away).
  • Someone must be at the grill at all times. Fires can happen so fast and if someone is even sitting down a few feet away, that can be enough time for the fire to get out of control.
  • If it's a propane tank: never have this inside your building, home or apartment. This includes storing.

What happens if a fires breaks loose?

A common mistake people do is throw water directly onto the grill. This is more dangerous than safe. When water is thrown onto a hot grill it creates steam and this steam can cause up to third degree burns instantly. Steam is worse than fire.

For this reason it is important that you attempt to turn off the gas or electricity source immediately. This will cut the energy supply to the fire and hopefully be enough to stop the grill fire. But only do this if it is safe to do so

Remove everyone from the area immediately. You and your families safety is the key importance.

Please Take This Seriously

We urge you to be alert and proactive with these safety precautions every time you grill your barbeque. It is hard for us to see when we have to conduct fire restoration on families homes.

We hope that you have found this helpful.

Silent Water Damage: 3 Things You Should Know About This Secretive (and Expensive) Damage

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

A water damaged unit This is an example of extreme water damage coming to the surface. Don't wait until it's too late.

Severe water damage is mainly done over time. Water is a silent killer of your home foundations, furniture, air quality and anything else in it’s path (think of your finger tips when they’re in water too long!).

It is not so much about the water you can see, instead the water you don’t. After the visible water is cleared water remains in the cracks, crevices and underneath items, slowly eroding everything it touches. This is called Bound Water.

When looking at a house in Harrisville, WV our team noticed that there were multiple areas of water damage that had slowly built up over time. The family never had a flood or major water leak, instead it was gradual, small water leaking that had caused some major foundation damage.

Why Does Water Damage Building Foundations So Easily?

Water erodes dirt and soil under, around or in concrete and other materials in three main ways:

  1. Through movement - small, minor movements and friction slowly erodes the concrete (think about how crevices are carved in rocks from a stream of water).
  2. Through expansion - water expands within wooden foundations and furniture. By expanding within the wood, it breaks the wood apart, ruining is structural integrity.
  3. Through oxidation - As water comes into contact with metals (in the foundations, furniture or electrical equipment) it creates oxidisation, creating rust. Water doesn’t have to be a liquid. Even as condensation it can create rust in foundations and important household items.

How Do You Avoid This Silent Water Damage?

Prevention is always better (and cheaper) than cure. The earlier you catch issues, the better.

Create a routine of checking your basement and foundations. Perhaps every two weeks. This check will only take you a few minutes but could save you tens of thousands of dollars!

  • Look for any leaks. e.g. plumbing fixtures and drains.
  • Feel for any dampness around pipes and fixtures.
  • Smell for any musty smells (indication of mold growing - therefore dampness)

If something catches your attention, find where the source of the water or dampness is coming from. If you can cut this off immediately (and safely) then do so and thoroughly clean up of all water you can see.

Had the family is Harrisville, WV known of this simple step they could have avoided costly repairs to the foundation and carpet replacement.

How Do You Fix Silent Water Damage?

It’s obvious to say: thorough water eradication is necessary. Water removal techniques include heat, air and sanitisation (don’t forget the potential for mold growth).

Silent water damage may require structural and foundation repairs as well as interior demolition and repairs. Common silent water damage normally consists of wood framing, drywall, insulation, trim, flooring and painting. It can also require exterior excavation and possibly pest control such as termite removal.

If you are unsure of any possible silent water damage please do not hesitate to call our team at SERVPRO on (304) 428 7378 and one of our technicians can assist you with further information.

We hope that this has helped.

Remember: set aside a few minutes bi-weekly to check for any silent water damage.

How to Determine If Your Home has a Mold Problem: The Air is the Concern

2/14/2020 (Permalink)

A bread roll with mold on the edge of it It's Not the Mold You See, It's the Mold You Don't

It’s widely known that mold can have health effects when in the home. Surprisingly it’s not the mold itself that is potentially dangerous, instead it’s the spores that fly in the air.

Mold is often present in homes in the Mid-Ohio Valley area. We often get calls regarding this in areas such as Parkersburg, WV, Harrisville, WV and other surrounding areas. Basically wherever there is water and moisture, there’s a strong chance of mold growth in the home.

Why is Mold Something to Be Aware Of?

Mold gives off microscopic spores that travel through the air. When inhaled it may cause some health effects and for this reason it is something we should all be aware of in our homes. The place where our families spend a lot of their time.

“Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter.”

The spores travel through the air and can impact the air in your home even if the mold is not visible to you. Have you ever smelt a slightly musty smell? That’s mold. That’s the spores in the air. Don’t be too concerned just yet though; there are levels to this and some amounts are safe (our team can help answer that question in further).

Things to Know About Mold

  • Mold is present everywhere. Whether it’s indoors or outdoors it will be present where there is moisture.
  • Mold spores are pushed through the air from any air flow, whether it’s from natural wind, AC, doorways or anything like that.
  • Mold spores thrive in moisture. The spores are the mold’s method of expanding the organism. When the spores land in moisture it allows them to grow into more mold. Keeping your home dry is very important to minimise mold growth.
  • Mold spores create a musty smell in the air. This is the easiest method to detect mold in your home.
  • High humidity helps grow mold. Humidity promotes moisture and this is ideal for mold growth.

How to Determine If Mold Is a Problem

Determining mold issues in your home is quite often simple but overlooked by homeowners. You just need to try these simple things:

  • Is your home very musty? If it is very musty or “damp” in the air smell, then there is most likely a mold issue occurring.
  • Can you see it? Sounds obvious and it is! If you can see mold growing, then there is a good chance that there is more mold growing underneath surfaces such as your dry wall. If you can see it, call someone immediately to have your questions and concerns answered. Do not ignore it.
  • Are there damp areas in your home? Like we mentioned before, mold loves moisture. Therefore it’s important to check areas that are more prone to mold - examples include the shower, laundry and the basement.

Mold Removal Vs Mold Remediation: Which is Your Best Bet?

Most businesses advertise themselves as “mold removal” companies and often make claims of full mold removal. This is an utter lie that customers should be aware of. It’s not possible to remove mold 100% as we mentioned before. Mold is everywhere. It’s the level of mold that is important to track.

Mold remediation is what we always suggest. Mold remediation reduces the mold spore count in the air, taking it back to the natural (or baseline) level. This is in addition to the removal of mold that is present in the home.

Please remember though; our team at SERVPRO cannot guarantee 100% mold removal as that will be lying to our customers and to you. We will remove as much as possible, remediate the air to it’s natural and safe levels and make your home air quality safe again. We cannot promise it will not grow back because this is dependant on moisture levels in your home and in certain areas, some of which can be unavoidable.

We hope this has helped

How Much Does Water Damage Restoration Cost in the Mid-Ohio Valley?

1/23/2020 (Permalink)

Text with SERVPRO logo Water Damage Restoration Cost

Water Damage can devastate our homes and commercial buildings far beyond the initial event. Unlike fire damage, water is extremely time sensitive. As time goes by it will further damage the walls, subfloor and structure along with building foundations and furniture if water isn’t removed quickly and properly.

Ongoing water damage can vary from expanding within your subfloor and walls, furniture and by creating a thriving environment for mold to grow. For these reasons water damage must be taken care of as soon as possible.

Luckily almost every water damage claim is covered by your homeowners insurance without any out of pocket expenses.

But what does this cost?

How Much Does Water Damage Restoration Cost?

The short answer is “it depends” but on average it is around $4,800 but this can increase or even decrease dramatically depending on multiple factors.

The goal of this blog post is to be fully transparent with you, explaining all the factors that contribute to the pricing, so that you can be better prepared when talking to SERVPRO. In addition, we offer a few tips of how to minimize your costs. So be sure to read carefully.

What are the factors?

Factor 1: Time (Time of Booking)

Our base time for call outs is during business hours (Monday - Friday, 8-5pm). There is an industry standard surcharge for emergency calls made after hours, late at night, on weekends and holidays. Typically, this surcharge can be about a $50 per hour surcharge.

Factor 2: Time (Man-hours)

Labor is a vital component in the process and one of the major factors that determine the price of a water damage restoration job. Man hours are summed up in this example; if a job requires 40 hours to complete, one man will do it in 40 hours, 2 men will do it in 20 hours, 4 in 10 hours and so on. There is no extra cost for extra people, the pricing only factors the total hours worked.

What Builds Into These Man Hours?

  • Distance: How far is your location from us? The further away, the more travel time required to and from the job, as well as follow up and check up from the SERVPRO team.
  • Demolition: In some instances, there is a level of demolition required for thorough water and moisture removal. This can be as small as removing glued carpet or perhaps removal of dry wall that is completely soaked with water and beyond repair. Each job has specific requirements for the team to get under, around or behind items to safely remove all water and moisture.
    • Side note about dealing with carpet: Carpet removal can be a time consuming job. If it can be rolled up, great! Some time is saved. However often the team need to cut the carpet into squares to safely remove it from surrounding fixtures.
  • Removal of items in area: Unimpeded access to the area is vital. If there is furniture or other objects obstructing access, they must be safely removed. The time required for this part of the process can vary depending on the amount and the size of the items.
    • Large or small items?
    • Does our team have to carry it up stairs, through the house or is there a basement door?
    • Do any items need to be disposed of?
    • Do we have to safely store them? Do you have a storage space or do we have to rent out somewhere in the meantime?

All these questions are considered when pricing.

    • Money saving tip: If safe to do so, you can save money by removing all the smaller items from the area before the team arrive. Warning: be careful of any electrical currents and the water category of the water in the area.

Factor 3: Time (the environment)

When referring to the environment we are talking about where the water damage has taken place (basement, kitchen, outdoors etc). One of the most important parts of water damage restoration that is often forgotten is the drying after the team has been at your home or building.

Our dehumidifiers are working overtime to completely rid your area of moisture. This is to prevent the build up of mold in the area and make it as safe as possible for you, your family or your employees.

  • Humid Airflow: In an ideal world, the area is completely air tight, with no external air coming out. Unfortunately this isn’t often the case. If there is a door with a breeze coming in and it’s humid outside, this can slow down the process up to a couple of days (worst case scenario).
    • Money Saving Tip: keep the area free from moisture and humidity as much as possible. If it’s hot and dry outside, a free flowing breeze can actually help speed up the process. We would recommend asking the team first if this is a good idea.
  • HVAC System: Your HVAC system may or may not be hurting the drying time. Proper air flow and humidity displacement can help remove moisture from your home and assist with drying faster.

Factor 4: Square Footage of Area

While this is an apparently obvious one we must include it. The more damage there is, the more the price will increase. You can keep your costs down slightly though if obstructions are kept to a minimum or removed entirely.

Factor 5: The Equipment

Our equipment is top of the line and recently updated, meaning they are more effective and efficient than ever before. Our research and development team have worked tirelessly to minimize their electric output while simultaneously improving their power. This means that their electricity consumption has significantly dropped. For example our fans use less electricity than your household vacuum!

The equipment required may range from any or all of these:

    • Exhaust fans: to extract air from the area.
    • Dehumidifiers: used to remove humidity in the air. Cleaning it as well as removing the moisture in the air that feeds mold.
    • Air Scrubbers & Water Extractors: used to clean contaminated air and large amounts of water.

As you can see there is a long list of variables that are considered when we are asked “how much does it cost for water damage restoration?” We hope that this has helped shed some light on to the processes involved so that you can minimize your costs where possible.

Some extra money saving tips include:

As mentioned earlier, the more time saved, the better it is. So be sure to follow these simple guidelines / tips when getting prepared.

    • Communicate as much information as possible over the phone: Have as much detail as you can when calling SERVPRO. Concise, detailed information means faster response time. While poor or confusing information means a delayed response time, which may cost more, remembering water damage is time sensitive.
  1. Photos or videos of the damaged area: photos and videos allow the team to better understand the job ahead. Make sure that they are well lit if possible. Too many shadows may make it harder for our team to understand the area.

Final piece of help: We recommend reading our article How to Minimize Your Costs After Water Damage for some more information that will help you with the process.

If you know someone wondering, “how much does water damage restoration cost?” please feel free to share this article with them. We hope that it helps you better understand everything that goes into the pricing.

7 Ways to Prevent Ice Build Up on Your Vehicle Windscreen - from A Few Dollars to FREE!!

12/13/2019 (Permalink)

Prevention is always better than cure. This is definitely in the case of ice on your windscreen. These prevention measures take less than a minute verses up to 15 minutes to warm water and scrape ice off in the morning. Which is very handy when you’re needing to leave quickly in the morning for work or seeing friends.

We’ve listed 7 different options for preventing ice build up on your vehicle windscreen. Starting at roughly $20 down to something that is free. But before you skip down to the free option, make sure to read all of them. You might find out that 3 is a better option for you than number 7.

Option 1: Roughly $20 - A Windscreen Cover

Ice cannot develop on the windscreen if it is covered. A cover takes less than 30 seconds to apply each time you park and (when attached correctly) you will save so much time. Say that it takes 10 minutes each morning to remove the ice. That’s 50 minutes each week wasted cleaning your screen! That’s almost 4 hours a month spent on cleaning your windscreen! No thanks.

Option 2: Use another item as a windscreen cover

Sounds silly, but it works. As long you have something to cover the windscreen, the ice cannot easily set. Items that could work include carpet remnants, old table cloths or even shower curtains. Personally we’d just take option 1 over this, but sometimes people prefer something that can be re-used rather than purchasing another item.

Option 3: Rubbing Alcohol - roughly $2-5

Simply pour 2 parts rubbing alcohol, 1 part water into a spray bottle and mix thoroughly. Spray this all over the windows each night when you park. This will make it much harder for the water or snow to settle on the windscreen at night. This process takes roughly 2-3 minutes each night.

Option 4: Vinegar Spray - roughly $2

Similar to Rubbing Alcohol, mix 3 parts white vinegar, 1 part water into a spray bottle. Spray each night.

Option 5: Onion - $0.50 per use

This is a lesser known method. Because … well it sounds a little strange. But by cutting an onion in half and rubbing it on your windows at night actually stops the frost setting over night. Make sure to cut it length ways. The oil from the onion acts as a lining on the glass, coating it and working wonders. Personally we think you should save the 50c and make the onion part of your dinner. But there’s a lot of people who swear by this method (because it does work).

Option 6: Salt Water - A few pennies

Saline solution works wonders and the technique is similar to option 3 and 4. Create a saline solution (salt solution) by mixing it with water in a spray bottle. The more salt, the merrier. Add a little hot water with the salt first so that the salt blends thoroughly. Once it’s blended, add the cold water.

Option 7: Park Facing East - FREE

This little life hack blew our minds! Use God’s given life giver, the sun, to do some of the hard work for you. Because the sun rises from the east, it will start heating up the ice on your windscreen, making it easier to scrape off in the morning. We definitely suggest mixing this option with options 3 to 6 if you decide to use them. It’s a winning combination.

If this helped please let us know. As we would like to continue to bring value to you and the community.

How To Be Prepared For a Snowstorm In Under One Hour

12/10/2019 (Permalink)

A woman walking through a snowstorm If You're Prepared, It's a Walk in the Park

Snowstorms come in fast and can keep you grounded in your home for a few days. A common issue we hear locally within the Parkersburg, WV and surrounding areas is that people are not prepared.

Luckily being prepared isn’t as hard as people think. Plus it can be as fast as one hour to set up your small survival kit. Keep in mind though, that the best practice is to have all these preparations done well before a snowstorm is even a thought. So follow these steps, invest in one hour of your day today or tomorrow and go and prepare for the “what if” this winter.

What You Can Do Now - Build an Emergency Kit

Head to your local Sams Club or Kroger and grab all of the following:

  1. Cell phone and portable charger. Portable chargers are extremely useful when the power is out.
  2. Flashlights with extra batteries. Try and avoid using candles. While they are romantic and set a beautiful mood, it increase the likelihood of a fire. Now although the fire will not expand beyond the home, we’d rather you have no smoke or fire damage in the home.
  3. Water and snack food This is much cheaper than you think. You can get 40 x 16 fl oz. for only $5 and this will be enough for the family for a few days. Snack ideas include canned beans, chips, dried fruit, canned fruit and or nuts. Keep in mind that you want items that do not need to be cooked, because the electricity may be out.
  4. Pet food. Don’t forget your little ones! It’s very common.
  5. First aid kit with any necessary medications and a pocket knife. Keep it simple. This might already be in your bathroom, but be sure to have some bandaids, gauze and disinfectant.
  6. A bucket to flush the toilet. Old school trick. Fill the bathtub with water. The flush may not work in a snowstorm. For this reason you will need to fill your bucket and throw it at the toilet water to start it flushing.
  7. Fire wood. Keeping warm is important. And a nice, family fire in the living room could be a nice way to interact.
  8. Waterproof matches and a can to melt snow for water (if want to feel like Rambo). This is a little over the top, but we heard this from someone. If you do this, send us a video. We want to see it!

Have the Car Prepared

If you plan on driving during the snowstorm or blizzard first check all local weather warnings. But if you do, make sure to have all these items at your ready:

  1. Full tank of gas - for the generator of vehicle
  2. Windshield scraper
  3. Tow chains or rope
  4. Tire chains
  5. Canned compressed air with sealant for emergency tire repair
  6. Cat litter or sand to help tires get traction, or road salt to melt ice
  7. Booster cables with fully charged battery or jumper cables
  8. Road maps
  9. Shovel

We hope this helps. But more importantly, we hope that there isn’t a snowstorm this winter!

How to Make Your Home Mold-Resistant in 8 Easy to Follow Steps

12/2/2019 (Permalink)

A loaf of sliced bread covered in mold Mold is born in moisture and a lack of airflow

Mold is a common household guest. Mold may cause health effects without us even knowing. For this reason, the article you are reading is designed to better equip you with moisture prevention and ultimately mold prevention in your home. After reading this article you will know better how to prevent mold in your home and commercial building in Parkersburg, WV and surrounding areas.

First, we must know why mold is potentially harmful to us.

Why Remove the Mold?

Most mold that builds up in our homes and offices give out spors. These spors travel through the air and we breathe them in.

Some mold can also contain many irritants and allergens, which may cause health effects. Very few types of mold contain toxins, however its is important to know the difference. One type is Toxic Black Mold. At the end of this article we will contain a link on “How to Determine if You have Black Toxic Mold In Your Home”.

Where does Mold typically grow in our home?

Mold grows in areas that are moist and do not have much air flow. Common areas that mold grow include: the showers and bathroom, clothing and inside water bottles. Other, less visible or even hidden areas include: under the carpets, backside of the drywall and inside walls, pipes and ceiling tiles.

Even if the mold is hidden, it can negatively effect our health because it is the air in which the spors are transported.

What are the steps to stop it growing?

The main goal with mold control comes down to one simple rule: moisture control. In the next 8 points you will know exactly how to moisture control your home and ultimately minimise the possibility of mold growing in your home.

  1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. While it is not possible to make your home completely “mold proof” you can make it “mold resistant”. Look around your home first and identify the problem areas. Some suggestions of what to look for include: Does the basement flood? Do any windows get frequent condensation? Are there any water stains on the walls or roofs? Once you’ve done this, go immediately to step 2.
  2. Dry wet/damp areas immediately. No moisture - no mold growing. Therefore the more proactive you are with removing the moisture / water, the harder it is for mold to grow and thrive. Side Note: Do not leave wet clothes in the washing machine. Mold can spread very quickly and this is very common in homes where we easily forget about our clothes.
  3. Proper ventilation. It is often our bad habits that help mold to grow in our homes. When cooking, showering or anything that includes steam always be sure to properly ventilate the room and home. This can be as simple as opening a window (yes even in winter) or having an exhaust fan in the room or a dehumidifier.
  4. Use Mold-resistant products. This is a harder one because it can be a costly one compared to the above. BUT once done, less work and time is needed on your behalf. Common dry wall allows little ‘pockets’ for mold to sit in comfortably. This is because it’s made of gypsum plaster core pressed between plies of paper. Whereas with mold resistant drywall the gypsum core is covered in fibreglass instead. This makes it highly water-resistant.
  5. Monitor the humidity indoors. According to the EPA, indoor humidity should be between 30% and 60%. Humidity meters are available at any local hardware store. Once you have the meter, you’ll be able to detect the high humidity areas in your home and follow step two again.
  6. Direct water away from the home. Make sure that the ground around your home is sloped slightly away from your home. Otherwise your home quickly builds up water. Not only does this make it vulnerable to mold build up, but also flooding and flooding damage, which can be very costly to fix.
  7. Clean or repair roof gutters. Often cases with mold derive from a leaking roof or damaged gutters. Check: that your gutters are cleaned regularly and inspected properly for damage. If damaged: repair as soon as possible.

We hope that these pointers have helped you understand further. Mold is something every home should avoid as it is an unnecessary, potential health risk in your home. And your health must be primary.

3 Small (Free) Tasks That Will Stop Your Christmas Tree Catching On Fire

11/25/2019 (Permalink)

A Christmas Tree on Fire with presents underneath it A Minute a Day Can Save You A Lot of Heartache

Christmas is a time of joy, yet unfortunately some families in the Parkersburg, WV area have had this time turn to heartache. This heartache was so easily avoidable that we had to share this with the community. They did not keep their Christmas tree moist. Their Christmas tree became dryer over the holiday period and therefore was more vulnerable to fire.

“These fires can grow faster than you can act. Quickly engulfing the home.”

Why Is a Christmas Tree a Fire Hazard?

As the leaves and wood becomes dryer, they become optimal fuel for fire. The fire can feed off the materials and grow. These fires can grow faster than you can act with getting water, and as the fire grows, everything else around it becomes more likely to catch alight as well. As the fire grows larger and larger, catching smaller items, the home becomes more likely to go as well.

How To Prevent Your Christmas Tree from Catching On Fire

There are three vital steps to take with your real Christmas Tree:

  1. Buy fresh Christmas Trees: The CPSC says “A fresh tree is green, its needles are hard to pull from branches, and its needles do not break when bent between your fingers."
  2. Keep the tree away from all heat sources: Do not play with fire. Literally. Keep your Christmas tree more than 5 feet away from the fireplace and 3 feet from a heater or candles. Also remember to keep your Christmas tree away from any exits and doorways.
  3. Water your tree daily: Do not let the leaves and wood dry. Luckily, this is very simple to do. All that you need is a spray bottle with water. Spray it every morning thoroughly to wet the leaves with a small mist over them. They will absorb the water, dramatically minimising the chance of fire.

A minute a day will save you tens of thousands of dollars in Fire Damage and a lot of heartache in a time that is meant for family.

If you wish to purchase an artificial tree be sure to check that it is fire resistant.

Enjoy your Christmas and have a joyous holiday period with your family.

5 Steps to a JUICIER THANKSGIVING TURKEY Without Burning the House Down

11/17/2019 (Permalink)

A cartoon of a turkey holding a sign saying thanksgiving day No-One Likes A Burned Turkey

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, the turkeys are almost ready. But sometimes we forget about them then BAM! The turkey is now more charcoal than caramel looking.

Sure, we're not a cooking company, but we do want your Thanksgiving to go to plan and be a happy time with the family. So here's a few things we found on the internet that we've done ourselves to make Thanksgiving great.

How to Cook a Juicy Thanksgiving Turkey, Charcoal-Free

  1. Thaw Correctly. Don't got stuffing that turkey in the oven prematurely. You've got to let it thaw! And it takes a little longer than you think. A 20lb turkey can take up to 4 to 5 days to properly thaw in the refrigerator. So be patient. Good things take time.
  2. Seal Those Juices In with Oil. Coat that baby with olive oil, butter or cooking spray (we recommend olive oil). By doing this before you cook, you will be ensuring that the juices  are locked in properly. Yum!
  3. Don't Stuff It With Stuffing. This was a new one for us. Don't go the generic route. You want to be remembered as a cooking extraordinaire right? So stuff that turkey with lemons, onions, garlic, celery or any other fragrant stuffings you can think of. Using bread will suck the juices out of the turkey, making it dryer. Another option is to cook the stuffing separately.
  4. Cover and leave it. A common problem our families in Parkersburg, WV were guilty of was constantly uncovering the thanksgiving turkey to baste it. This allowed the steam to escape which meant the turkey was getting dryer, rather than keeping juicy.
  5. Follow directions and set a timer! This is where it is important. Year after year we have been called out to remediate fire damage from a very well-done Thanksgiving Turkey and a well-done kitchen. Even if you're from Harrisville, WV, don't forget.

BONUS REMINDER: Check your smoke alarm in your kitchen. Are the batteries up to date?

Please don't forget to share this with your friends and family and have an amazing time with them during this Thanksgiving.

From the team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

Happy Thanksgiving!

3 Simple Steps to Avoid up to $10,000 in Damages from a Frozen Spigot

11/11/2019 (Permalink)

A cartoon depiction of a faucet with a plant stalk growing out of the back A few small actions can save you thousands

As the winter months approach across America everyone is getting ready to warm themselves up. But there’s a common problem that we see in Vienna, WV and other surrounding areas; home owners are forgetting three simple steps to stop their spigot freezing over in winter. When spring comes around and they attempt to use their hose for the garden they are horrified to notice flooding and water damage in their home.

Frozen spigots can be the cause of thousands of dollars in damage to a home. We have seen a home in St. Mary’s, WV even experience $10,000 worth of water damage as a result of flooding and water damage. This was a very easily avoidable cost. By following these very simple (and often forgotten) steps to winterise your spigot, you can avoid an awful surprise in Spring.

The 3 Steps to Avoid a Frozen Faucet During Winter

  1. Disconnect Your Hose: Do this step in Fall. If you’re reading this after, do it now! This is important because when a hose is connected it holds a small amount of water. This water, when freezing, expands to the thickness of the hose and ultimately blocks it. When this happens the hose can leak or burst. The real damage comes from the backing up of the water when the tap is turned on. This break can even happen in winter. When this happens it is common that the family does not notice the problem until Spring! Weeks to months later. Which means that any water damage has become much, much worse. Yes, this means more money for remediation. So please, do not forget to disconnect your hose.
  2. Use an Outdoor Faucet Cover: This is the next step and a lesser thought of one. Disconnecting your hose is one thing, but does not make your spigot winterised just yet.

We hope that this has helped and will save you money.

Doing this Simple Thing Can Save You Thousands of Dollars with Your Water Heater

11/4/2019 (Permalink)

A water heater hanging on the wall In Only An Hour or Two You Can Save Thousands of Dollars

Water heaters are so important in our home. They provide warm showers, baths and clean our washing. Yet, so many home owners forget to do a simple flushing each year. This simple flushing and cleaning will help avoid the likelihood of a leak or burst, which can potentially cost thousands of dollars in water damage.

It’s Like Earning $1,000+ in a Few Hours

Think of it this way: If you don’t spend that money on fixing the water damage, you’ve ‘made’ that money. So by spending a few hours, doing what we will describe below, you will avoid the likelihood of a water heater leak or burst. Therefore … you’ve avoided spending $1,000+ on fixing it.

The Issue You Will Avoid

Besides leaks and/or bursts in your Williamstown home water heater, avoiding routine maintenance can also create problems such as low hot water supply, loud (and annoying) sounds as a result of overheating, faults in the heating mechanism or even clogged pipes. All these cost you money to fix. All these are avoidable. But how do you perform a flush? We will explain below.

How to Perform a Flush on Your Water Heater

There are two methods to do this:

  1. Difficulty = easy: This will cost some money (still a lot cheaper than fixing water damage); use your local plumber. A local plumber has expertise in this and will be able to promptly flush your water heater.
  2. Difficulty = Medium. Flushing it yourself. It is important to flush your water heater annually, and this will only take a few hours to do (probably not even that). This will be explained below:

Flushing it Yourself

Before reading this we at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties only recommend that you do this if you are familiar with the steps provided. Also be sure to take all safety precautions seriously. If you’re not confident, please use a local plumber. If you’re confident, please keep reading.

  1. Turn off all gas and electricity to the heater.
  2. Turn off the water valve.
  3. Turn on the hot water in a nearby sink to release any pressure.
  4. Connect a garden hose to the faucet and release any water to a bucket and remove the water.
  5. Now, turn on the cold water and allow for the drainage of the tank. Continue until you have completely flushed the tank and the water is almost clear.

Why This Simple Flushing Will Decrease the Chance of Leaks or Flooding

This simple maintenance yearly will allow for any sedentary water to be removed. This will completely replace all water within the tank, also removing any bacteria build up in the water and allow for the pipes to be completely flushed out. (NOTE: For more detailed flushing and sterilisation we recommend using your local plumber). Furthermore it will reduce the likelihood of overflowing of the tank, which can lead to leaks or even bursts, resulting in flooding and water damage within your home. Water remediation is costly when compared to the other option of simple, yearly maintenance.

If the unfortunate event of a leak or potential water damage occurs, please do not hesitate to give us a call because if left too long, water damage exponentially gets worse over a short period of time. Please read our article regarding water damage steps for further information. While this article is about commercial buildings, the same principles apply with homes.

Please share this article on your Facebook. If you can help one friend save money that will be a huge help for them.

5 Must-Dos After Fire or Smoke Damage (Knowing Now Is Better Than Knowing Later)

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

Flames of fire It's better to know and not need it, than to need it and not know it

Fire damage to your home or business can be hard to deal with. What makes it better (or worse) is how it is dealt with after. There are some very simple steps to follow to make sure that you can minimise the effects from fire and smoke damage. Follow these below like a checklist if you're ever in this situation.

First, Lets Start with the Do's

  1. Limit the movement in the rooms. Too much movement from you, your family, staff or pets creates air flow. This air flow moves soot particles around the room, creating further damage to the walls, floor and furniture. If possible, close off all windows, doors and any other openings.
  2. Keep hands clean. Hands can transfer soot to other areas of your home or business and damage other items unnecessarily.
  3. Cover all upholstery, furniture etc.  Keeping in mind point 1's "minimal movement", grab some linen, or cloth and cover all carpet, furniture or upholstery so that no more soot can fall onto these. IMPORTANT: Be sure to use dry towels and cloths.
  4. Turn off all electrical appliances. This includes the fridge, freezer, HVAC, heaters. Turn them all off to avoid further triggering fires and/or to limit air flow.
  5. Wipe soot off chrome in kitchen and bathroom faucets. This is important to avoid staining of the chrome. Use a slightly wet cloth when wiping down the chrome and faucets. Once completed, lightly coat these surfaces with a lubricant for greater protection.

Important things to avoid

  1. Do not attempt to wash the walls. While you may want to save some money on this and "do it yourself", different surfaces react differently. Some surfaces are porous and absorb soot which can further stain. It's always preferred to have a professional do this as they will have the knowledge of how to clean safely and minimising further damage.
  2. Do not consume any food or drink that was in proximity of the fire. This sounds obvious when we read it, but you would be surprised how in the moment, it slips your mind. Soot is sneaky. It can get in everything, underneath your packaging and lids. This contaminates your food and drink, which can lead to health issues or sickness. You’re best to throw it out.
  3. Do not shampoo carpet or furniture without first contacting a professional. If done incorrectly this can further embed the door or stains. Contact SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties first. Our team can determine the severity of the fire or smoke damage and aid you with the proper method of removal.
  4. Do Not turn on any ceiling fixtures. Again referencing the "Do's point 1". Turning on any ceiling fixtures will create air flow, and therefore move the soot around, furthering the issue and damage.
  5. Do Not attempt to clean electrical equipment. This is very important. After a fire, there is a lot of damage, particularly with electrical equipment. Damage such as fraying of wires or open circuits leave anyone who touches them vulnerable to electric shots or electrocution. Turn off all power outlets if possible but do not attempt to clean them until the SERVPRO team have assisted the situation.

We hope that this has helped. Your safety is our priority. We also are attempting to help you save money and avoid further damage in unfortunate events such as fire and smoke damage

If this was helpful, please share it on your social media so that your friends and family can be informed.

Preparation always beats 'cure'.

10 Vital (and Simple) Points in Preventing Fire from Devastating Your Business

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

Fire damage can devastate your business. The majority of business fires are avoidable, or at the very least, can be minimised, but only if the proper precautions are taken. These simple steps will help significantly reduce the likelihood of fire devastation in your business. Our goal with this blog post is for your business in Parkersburg, Vienna or anywhere else in West Virginia, to not need us. Yes, our business is to help restore damage, but we do not wish that upon anyone. And if it can be avoided, we will strive to help you. Anyway here are the tips:

Remove ALL Fire Hazards

Yep, this sounds obvious, but it is surprising how easy it is for business owners and staff to "move it later". This is where problems may arise. This includes any combustibles, overloaded power outlets (a very common one) or even flammable items near windows (believe it or not, the "magnify glass effect" can happen.

Fire Extinguishing Equipment

Most companies have these, but where they fall down is with not having the right fire prevention systems in place. These are vital because you want your fire extinguisher and/or sprinkle system working when they're needed.

  1. Replace the fire extinguisher annually
  2. Have it mounted properly, highly visible and without any obstructions (this is another example of staff putting something in front of it and "they'll move it later")
  3. Do not have any obstructions within 18 inches of the sprinklers.
  4. Have a strict fire safety and fire equipment inspection every 6 months

Staff Training

Staff need to know what to do in fire emergencies. Where to go, how to evacuate, where the fire extinguishers are etc. Below is a checklist for you to use with the bare minimums of your staff training. These steps will ensure proper execution of tasks in the event of a fire, small or large.

  1. New staff are taught about the fire safety measures within 48 hours of beginning.
  2. All staff are re-trained or reminded of the safety measures every 6 months. This is a simple training that may only take as little as 30 minutes (only 1 hour per year!) but will potentially save you thousands or tens of thousands if fire strikes.
  3. Weekly checking that there are no fire hazards or fire obstructions: this one is very important. Have someone spend 20-30 minutes at the beginning and end of the week checking. Make it their role. When your team is always checking, they are always conscious of fire safety during the remainder of the week (it's subconscious training that can save you a lot of money).

Other Important Steps for Your Business

  • Always remove or cover exposed electrical wires
  • If extension cords are not being used, disconnect them. These should only be temporary uses because of their danger of creating fires at the connections.
  • Keep all items and "clutter" more than 36 inches away from electric panels
  • No trash or clutter in hallways. This is for your staff safety as well. If evacuation is needed, a clear pathway can be the difference between life or ... worse. Dramatic? Yeah maybe, but your safety and the safety of your staff is primary.

There's an important saying, "When the times are good, we forget they can get bad. When the times are bad, we forget they can get good." Fire safety protocol and precautions are so important. Especially when the times are going good. It takes only a second for things to change. And if this disaster does happen, do not feel too helpless. Our team will help. You will over come it.

Please share this blog post on your Facebook, Instagram or wherever you can, so that others can be better equipped. A few seconds of your time may help someone prevent a fire in their business (or even home!).

4 Hot Tips to Keep Your House Safe This Halloween

10/21/2019 (Permalink)

A scarecrow with a jacker-lantern as his head and a crow sitting on top of it Prevention is always easier (and cheaper) than cure

Halloween, the time the "dead" rise. A lot of fun for your family and your kids, but also a lot of fun for trouble makers. TRICK OR TREAT!

It's always better to know the information and not need it, than to need it and not know it. So we decided to write this blog post to help you be informed, if anything were to happen this halloween.

KEEPING TROUBLE MAKERS AWAY

Kids love to throw toilet paper and eggs at houses on halloween (or even, unfortunately, vandalism. Fun for them, very annoying for you. Luckily there are a few simple steps you can do that will deter them from choosing your house.

  1. Keep your house well lit during the night. The last thing kids want is to get caught. The fun is in getting away with doing something naughty. So if they see your house (a well lit house with no-where to secretly throw toilet paper or eggs) or your neighbours house (a house full of dark spots or blind spots), which do you think they'll choose? Now we're not wanting your neighbours egged, so maybe tell them to read this article as well.
  2. Keep the surrounding areas of your building clear. The more clutter and bushes/trees around your property, the more tempting it is to choose your house or building for tricks. This may mean doing a little (or big) clean up outside your home or building. Annoying? Yes. But it would be more annoying to be egged, "TP'd", or even graffitied on.

Avoiding Common Fire Hazards

While it sounds obvious, there a lot of common practices that we do in West Virginia (and around the United States) that appear innocent in the moment, but can turn into avoidable fire damage. Here are a few that surprise families and business owners:

  • Open Flame Candles. While open flame candles add a great ambiance, either beautiful or creepy, we advise avoiding using open flames. Instead opting for battery operated candles. These are very fairly priced today from most halloween stores. If you do insist on open flames though, make sure that all flammable items are more than 5 feet from the candle, and if on an elevated surface, such as a shelf, nothing flammable underneath the shelf.
  • Avoid Flammable Decorations. This is a lesser known one than the above. Dried flowers, crepe paper, and cornstalks are all highly flammable. For this reason it is very important to keep them far from open flames, heaters and even light bulbs.

Besides all these, go out and have a lot of fun with your family on this amazing holiday. Use the day (and night) to its fullest.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN from the team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties

5 Simple Steps for Protecting Your Electrical Equipment from Corrosion

10/14/2019 (Permalink)

a hand pouring a glass of water onto a laptop Water Damage and Corrosion Can Slow Down Business and Be Extremely Costly

Today's businesses rely heavily on electronic equipment. From lighting to computers and machinery. For this reason, it is vital that remediation after flooding is done correctly in your commercial building.

Corrosion Damage

Corrosion is silent in most cases however a huge danger to your appliances. If not dealt with correctly, this can very costly to your business, both financially and with intangibles, such as vital information on your computers.

How Does Corrosion Happen and How Do I Avoid It?

Corrosion is caused by moisture within the area. This moisture creates iron oxide, commonly known as rust. This rust stops the flow of electric currents and can make your equipment useless. To avoid corrosion it's important to prevent or remove the moisture.

Examples of areas in your commercial business where corrosion can impact your workflow include:

  • Power outlets
  • Circuit interruptors
  • Light switches
  • Timers
  • Computers
  • Machinery

How to Remove Corrosion In Your Electrical Equipment

During the water damage or flooding clean up process it is very important to consider all steps. Be careful! If not dealt correctly, the damage can be unnecessarily substantial. With handling vital components of your business (i.e. computers and other vital equipment) we would recommend using a professional. A professional knows exactly how to tackle the issues in the fastest and safest way possible. Remember: time is money in business.

If using a professional is not an option, here are some steps to be aware of:

  1. Disconnect ALL electrical devices: this is important for your safety and the safety of the equipment. If exposed to water the devices may blow or the electric current passing through the water may pose a danger to you.
  2. Look for White or Green Build Up: these appear where the "connectors" are exposed. For example: charging ports on devices, exposed wires etc. This white or green build up is a sign of corrosion.
  3. Use Cotton Swabs or Cloth: combine these with a gentle cleaning solution will allow you to clean and remove the corrosion.
  4. Gentle Cleaning Solution: suggestions include: 1. baking soda and water 2. white vinegar or 3. methylated spirits or full grain alcohol.
  5. Let Them Dry CompletelyThis is vital. If the areas are not fully dried out, the risk of corrosion is high. So you will have done all that work for nothing.

The Benefits of not DIY'ing This

  • DIY may void your insurance. Professional care doesn't
  • DIY may void your equipment warranties.
  • A professional will be faster (time is money in business)
  • More thorough job, and then they are responsible for the quality of the job, not your staff who are likely to be inexperienced in this type emergency.
  • Minimal to no risk to yourself or your staff.

It's for these reasons we always recommend using a professional for removing corrosion in your electrical equipment. If you are not sure of who to use, contact SERVPRO of Wood, Richie & Pleasants Counties and we will happily help suggest someone.

We hope that this was helpful. Please be sure to share this on your Facebook, LinkedIn or anywhere else, so that others can know what to do in this situation because this is one area that most business owners do not think about.

Black Toxic Mold - What You Can Do To Avoid Having This Health Risk In Your Family Home

10/7/2019 (Permalink)

Mold is easily found in everyone's home or workplace. We've all seen it. We've all overlooked it. However some molds can potentially cause health effects if exposed to it too long. But no need to start freaking out, knowledge is power, and in this blog post you will learn how to differentiate between black mold and black toxic mold.

What is Black Mold?

Black mold has a black pigment, however this does not necessarily mean that it is toxic. There are multiple kinds of black mold that include nigrospora, cladosporium and alternaria, but lets face it, you're not here for a mold education, you just want to know if it's toxic or not.

What Makes Mold Toxic?

The toxic component, (mycotoxins) in mold are found in the spores that travel through the air. When inhaled these may effect our health.

How Can I Determine Black Toxic Mold?

The black toxic mold, named Stachybotrys chartarum, is dark black or sometimes even dark green. For this mold to grow, the surface that it is on needs to be wet for at least 72 hours (3 days) and have access to moisture the that entire time.

The Environment Will Determine The Mold Growth

The growth of Black Toxic Mold lies within the environment around it. This includes the following:

  • Poor or limited ventilation/air flow
  • Moisture in the air
  • Moisture on the surface

Here are some images of black toxic mold. Have a scroll through and then come back to this page to find out what to do next.

Does Ventilation Stop Mold or Help it Grow?

9/23/2019 (Permalink)

One of the common questions we get about mold is "how can I stop mold growing in my home?" It's important to think about because prevention is always better than cure.

If you never get mold, you'll never need us.

So we wanted to help share some insight into mold prevention so that your home can stay mold-free.

All ventilation is not created equal

Mold thrives in humid environments. This is because the moisture in the air feeds it, creating an environment for the mold to grow and prosper.

Common places for mold to appear are bathrooms (the hot showers), kitchen (steam from cooking), attics and basements. All these environments have one common thing - steam.

How Should I Ventilate My House?

The main goal of your ventilation is to allow the steam and moisture to escape. Luckily ventilation is more simpler than it sounds. This can be as easy as two options:

  • Open the window Yep. Let that steam get out. It might be a little colder inside for the moment, so we recommend throwing on a warm top and pants while the steam escapes.
  • Install an exhaust fan If you would prefer to keep the window closed, installing an exhaust fan would be a great option. But it's very important to remember to turn it on every time there's steam present (when you're in the hot shower, when cooking).

Invest in Your Health

When installing an exhaust fan it's important to not cut costs unnecessarily. These two simple steps include:

  • Buying a better quality fan this might be a little more expensive but will mean a more effective job. Plus, the fan is likely to last longer (which will ultimately save you money long term).
  • Have a professional install it Unless you are very experienced in the topic, we would recommend having it professionally installed. Again, this will ensure it working properly as well as it lasting longer.

We hope that this has helped. Please share this blog post on your social media so that others can find out how to keep their homes mold-free.

Is Your Water Safe? The Three Categories that You Should Know

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

An infographic for the three categories of water. It's important to know if your water is safe

Water can carry many contaminants that be very harmful to your health. Water can be contaminated in all situations, from small leaks to large water damage such as storm. It's often overlooked by home and business owners and they opt to clean it themselves. Unfortunately some have become very sick as a result.

We want you to avoid this. So we are sharing the IICRC S500 Standard, called "The Three Categories of Water". This will help you determine whether the water spill, flood or damage is safe for you to clean.

Category 1: Clean (Clear) Water

This category is the cleanest of the three. Often it originates from the bath, sink or even falling rainwater. This is safe to clean and touch, in most cases. However it is important to know that some contaminants easily dilute into the water. So please consider the following:

  1. The Origin of the Water: Where did it come from? Was this origin contained and without contaminations?
  2. The Duration the Water Has Been There: Duration is very important. Stagnant water can become contaminated very quickly from external sources such as plants, dirt, air or animals.

Category 2: Grey Water

Water that is grey in colour (and also various shades of brown) are considered to contain contamination of some degree. This water may potentially have germs that can cause sickness and we recommend you act with caution. Correctly cover your skin (it's a big absorber into the blood stream) or alternatively call an expert to assist you with the best approach. They may even have to remove it for you.

Category 3: Black Water

We often are asked the question: "Is black water safe?" The short answer is: definitely not. Black water is extremely contaminated. Often as a result of faecal matter and sewage being throughout it. If consumed accidentally we recommend seeing a medical professional immediately.

Black water often occurs from sewage or toilet blockage and back up, as well as flood water. In the instance of black water being present, please call an expert immediately and remove all occupants, humans and animals, immediately from the area.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call us of 304-428-7378 and we will happily assist you.

Hope this helps,

from the team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

SERVPRO owner and family evacuated for Hurricane Dorian

9/9/2019 (Permalink)

A storm map showing the size of Hurricane Dorian over the East Coast of America Hurricane Dorian is one of the largest hurricanes to hit the East Coast in a long time. Photo: express.co.uk

Hurricane Dorian has rocked the East Coast this week with devastating damage caused to our neighbours in the Bahamas, the state of South Carolina and the outskirts of Virginia.

The damage will be in the billions

Hundreds of homes and businesses have been effected by this category 5 hurricane with an estimated $1.5 to $3 billion total damage to all areas touched by Dorian.

One of our dear owners, Steve, and his family were directly effected by Hurricane Dorian, when visiting Florida. "Within two days of arriving for our family vacation we were ordered a mandatory evacuation. It was a scary time. We heard what this hurricane was capable of and we did not want to take any chances."

Thankfully no-one was injured or hurt and despite the worrying time, everything turned out all right for the family and their friends.

"We hope that anyone affected is able to get aid and is not financially hurt by this hurricane. Our prayers are with all the families affected by this." says Steve.

The team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants counties reiterate Steve's words. Our prayers are with everyone effected, and we are happy that Steve and his family are safe.

How to Minimise Your Costs After Water Damage in Your Commercial Building in Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties

9/2/2019 (Permalink)

Flooding can cost businesses a large amount of time and money. It is important to act quickly to minimise the damage to not only the building, but also to your business. The longer you are closed, or not operating at full capacity, the bigger the financial hit to your company.

More notably, water damage, if not remediated properly, can weaken structures, damage equipment or even create mold, which can effect the health of yourself or staff members.

If the unfortunate circumstance happens where your commercial building suffers water damage of any type, its important to act quick, with professional help. However we at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties understand that some instances can be a costly endeavour. Here are some simple tips we would like to share to help make the process smoother before we come to complete the water damage remediation for you.

5 Simple Steps to Take Before We Arrive

  1. Stop the Water at the Source - if at all possible, stop any water from continuing into the premises. The more water, the more damage and clean up necessary.
  2. Turn off any electricity immediately - this is a high danger to all persons in the building. Electricity travels through water extremely fast and can injure or even kill. Please do this immediately, but only if safe to do so. Do not put yourself in danger.
  3. Remove and Mop All Visible Water - This step alone will significantly decrease the labor required by our team and save your business a lot of money.
  4. Put Up Warning Signs - this is for the safety of yourself and your business. Proper, highly visible signage is important to minimise the likelihood of someone getting injured in your business work place.
  5. If possible - remove furniture or place plastic underneath them - water is sneaky. It can get up into your wooden furniture and rust metal. If you can remove it (safety first), or even put plastic underneath it, stopping water from being able to damage it, this will save you a lot of money in damages later.

What To Do Now

If you haven't already called us, please call 304-428-7378 now and our team can further help over the phone, and if necessary we will come out to your premises.

Our professional team is highly trained for these situations. They are also highly aware of legal and environmental concerns with water damage restoration. It is our duty to fully restore your commercial building within the budgetary constraints.

Every hour costs your business money. Our team endeavours to complete the job professionally and quickly so that you can get back to what you do best.

We hope that this has been a useful article for you,

Being Egged and How to Remove It from your Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties Home or Business

8/26/2019 (Permalink)

Toilet Paper lying on its side and to the right is a cracked egg shell, split it half with the egg and yolk on the floor These two are great inside the home, not outside.

Funny for Some, Annoying for You

It’s a fun thing for kids to do, but extremely annoying and inconvenient for you. When getting egged acting quick is important to avoid further absorption of the egg into your paint, wood or other materials.

How to Remove the Egg

Use a garden hose and/or a combination of warm soapy water. This will break up the egg and toilet paper allowing them come off easier. Please be careful of using any power washers. Due to their power they can damage the paint of whatever you’re spraying. This will create a higher cost than necessary, and we don’t want that!

How to Remove the Toilet Paper

Be careful not to simply tug at the toilet paper. It may break and make the cleaning up experience more annoying than it needs to be.

An option would be to use a leaf blower or long stick (or even a pool cleaner handle) to get it down.

The team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties hope this never happens to you, but if it does, we hope these little tips helped.

Is Mold Hiding From You?

8/19/2019 (Permalink)

Mold hiding in a bathroom.

We’re sure you’ve smelt it before. That musty smell in a room, maybe your basement, or your bathroom, maybe even your bedroom. That may be a sign of mold growing within your home.

This mold is just as dangerous as the visible mold.

Mold can be growing in numerous places out of your sight:

  1. Behind the dry wall
  2. Under the carpet
  3. Underneath the wallpaper
  4. In the wall panelling
  5. Within furniture

Mold grows anywhere where there’s moisture. But before you pack your bags to move home, or start tearing down the dry wall to find it, here’s some small steps you can take.

  1. Call a professional for an inspection.
  2. We will ask a few questions over the phone, so have these prepared so that your process is easier
    1. Can you see the growth? (In this instance, you cannot)
    2. Does the room have much moisture in it naturally?
      1. Have you remove the moisture?

These questions will help us understand the situation better and give you the best information possible. If there is anything you’re uncertain about regarding mold in your home, do not hesitate to call us on 304-428-7378.

Thankyou from the team at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

How to Thaw a Frozen Pipe

11/27/2018 (Permalink)

It’s not the frozen pipes that really gets our phones ringing, It’s the thawing pipes that leak and spew water after a hard freeze.

Before you do anything, shut off the water supply to that section of plumbing (or the entire house if that’s the only option) because the real trouble begins after the thaw.  That's because frozen water may be acting as a plug, preventing water from spilling out of the cracks in your pipes. When that plug is eventually thawed, water gushes out. Make sure to be ready with a mop, bucket, and towels in case there’s a plumbing leak. It’s not the frozen pipes that really get plumber's phones ringing, It’s the thawing pipes that leak and spew water after a hard freeze.

Use a space heater, heat lamp, or hair dryer to thaw the frozen length of pipe. Wrapping freezing pipes with thermostatically controlled heat tape (from $50 to $200, depending on length) is also an effective way to quickly thaw a trouble spot.

Never thaw pipes using a propane torch, which presents a fire risk.

If disaster does happens SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties is standing by to respond 24/7 to the Greater Mid Ohio Valley region.  304-428-7378.

Bonfire Tips for Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Fall is a great time to enjoy a bone fire in Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants Counties.

Fall is the best time of year for bonfires. If you are having a bonfire, whether it’s to get rid of garden waste or part of a celebration, follow the simple tips below to make sure you, and others, are safe.

Building a bonfire

Fire can spread rapidly, so where and how you build your bonfire is very important. When you have a bonfire, follow these simple guidelines:

  • Give warning to your neighbors beforehand - they are much less likely to complain
  • Light the bonfire at a time least likely to affect your neighbors - for example, not on a warm day when people will be in their garden
  • Make sure to only burn dry material not damp, which causes more smoke
  • Build the bonfire away from sheds, fences and trees
  • Make sure there are no cables, like telephone wires, above the bonfire
  • NEVER use petrol or paraffin to get the fire going as it may get out of control quickly
  • As a rule of thumb the bonfire should be a minimum of five times its height from property
Bonfire safety tips

Once the bonfire is lit, make sure you:

  • Keep a fire extinguisher or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies
  • Never leave the bonfire unattended
  • Keep children and pets away from the bonfire
  • Don’t throw any fireworks into the fire
  • Don't burn aerosols, tires, canisters or anything containing foam or paint - many produce toxic fumes and some containers may explode, causing injury

Once the bonfire has died down, spray the embers with water to stop it reigniting.

Christmas lights safety tips

11/1/2018 (Permalink)

Christmas lights safety tips for your Wood, Ritchie or Pleasant County home.

A MOV house lit up with Christmas lights is a beautiful sight to behold. The Mid Ohio Valley is rich with historical homes from early 1800's. But stringing lights across your roof and around your home can be a real safety hazard if you're not careful. So before you flip the switch to dazzle friends and family with your spectacular light show, take a few moments to run through a quick safety checklist. You can find them online.

?  Before you string up a single strand of lights, cautiously check them for cracked cords, frayed ends or loose connections.

?  The combination of shorts in electrical lights and a tinder-dry tree can be deadly. There are 250 Christmas tree fires and 14 related deaths each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. So always keep your tree well-watered. Not only will it stay fresh and green, but it might also keep your house from burning down.

?  Modern lights have fused plugs, preventing sparks in case of a short circuit. Toss out old strands of lights that don't have fuses and get a set of newer, safer lights.

?  If bulbs have burned out, replace them right away, but make sure you use the correct wattage bulbs.

?  Water and debris can find its way into outdoor sockets, so always make sure outdoor lights are plugged into a ground fault circuit interrupter outlet to reduce the risk of shorts and shocks.

?  Keep an eye on extension cords, as they can occasionally overheat. Just touch-test the cord. If it's hot, unplug it.

?  Don't use tacks, nails or screws to hang lights, They might pierce the cable and become electrified. Try using insulated hooks instead.

?  When running extension cords along the ground, make sure to elevate plugs and connectors with a brick to keep snow, water and debris out of the connections.

?  Tape down any ground-level extensions cords to prevent people from tripping over them.

?  Check to make sure lights have been rated by a testing laboratory. You can see a list of federally recognized labs on the Occupational Safety & Health Administration's website.

?  Not all lights are rated for outdoor use. Indoor lights often have thinner insulation, which can become cracked and damaged when exposed to the elements outdoors. So make sure the ones you string up on the house belong out there.

?  Never leave Christmas lights running when you go to bed at night or when you leave the house.

?  When you put your lights back into storage after the holidays, be sure to put them in a well-sealed container to prevent possible water damage and to block hungry rodents looking to turn the cords into lunch. Our final advice? Be careful with ladders.

Protect Against Water Loss in the MOV

10/26/2018 (Permalink)

Storing your valuables in cardboard boxes on the basement floor is like asking for your belongings to be ruined. Instead try plastic totes

If water finds its way into your home, which in the Mid Ohio Valley seems to be inevitable after this past summer, you want to make sure you take extra steps to make sure your belongings are protected.

Something you will want to remember when putting items in your basement is to make sure they are at least a minimum of 6" off the ground.  Avoid using cardboard boxes when you possible as they can absorb and hold moister just from the air. Instead one thing you can do is use plastic totes to place your items in.  They may cost more, but in the long run they offer an added level of protection that will keep your more prized possessions or cherished memories safe.

A few other things to consider when protecting against water damage...

1) Make sure you clean your Sump Pump filter at least twice per year to ensure no debris has found its way in and the pump is working properly.

2) Clean your gutters and landscaping to promote proper drainage away from the house.  Too much water running directly at the foundation of the home will lead to water finding its way in through cracks in the floor or walls of your basement.

3) If possible have a backup battery for your sump pump so if there is a power outage in a storm the pump can continue to run as necessary.

By following these simple steps you ensure that your home and valuables are protected from any water loss event.

But if the worst happens SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, & Pleasants Counties is here to help 24/7.  Call 304-428-7378.

Does Your Wood, Ritchie, or Pleasants County Home Have A Mold Problem?

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

Be careful! Without proper training, you could be spreading mold throughout your home.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

2 Types of Less Commonly Known Fire Protection Systems for Your MOV Commercial Building

10/25/2018 (Permalink)

2 types of fire protection systems for your Wood, Ritchie & Pleasants county business.

When it comes to fire protection for your commercial building, you will want to be sure you have the best possible solutions in place. By Knowing your options that are available is important.  Deluge systems and pre-action systems are two less commonly known types of sprinkler systems available in commercial applications. Here’s what you need know about them.

Deluge Fire Protection Systems

Deluge systems are dry systems that have open sprinkler heads, but the pipe is not pressurized with air.  The deluge system is connected to a smoke detection system. When activated it opens, and water is discharged through all the sprinkler heads.

The deluge fire protection system will use all of the available sprinkler heads in the area it is placed. That’s why these systems are best used in wide-open spaces where fires need to be flooded. Some example locations include:

  • Airport hangars;
  • Industrial plants;
  • Transformers;
  • Chemical processing plants.

Pre-Action Fire Protection Systems

Pre-action fire protection systems use both wet and dry components to control and extinguish fires. The pipes serving pre-action systems are constantly filled with highly-compressed air, but the sprinkler heads are left closed. This is the major difference between the two systems because, in the deluge systems, the sprinkler heads are left open. Until it is activated, this system is a dry one.

Once it activates, it will release water.  The activation is caused when a smoke detection system identifies a fire hazard. Then once the piping fills with water, creating a wet pipe system.  Lastly, the individual closed sprinkler heads over the fire will open to release water to extinguish the fire in the targeted area. Pre-action fire protection systems are commonly found in commercial buildings such as:

  • Museums;
  • Art galleries;
  • Libraries;
  • Data Centers and other data storage facilities.

Fighting Fire with Science.

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Closing your door when you sleep can dramatically increase your chances of surviving a house fire.

Did you know that 40 years ago you had about 17 mins. to get out of your house during a fire?

Now you have have about 3 mins. This is due to the synthetic materials, furniture and construction materials that we use. A new consumer survey conducted by UL FSRI showed that many people keep their doors open at night and don't know that a closed door could potentially save their life in a home fire.

Fire spreads faster than ever. Having your door closed can save your life. It gives you more time to find a way out before the room fills with smoke or more time to be rescued.

Having the door closed slows down the smoke, and fire itself.

One concern that people had with having the door was that they wouldn't be able to hear the alarm. The difference, in one study, showed that there was only a 17 decimal difference between the door closed and opened. It was still loud enough to hear the alarm in the room with the door closed.

Along with the alarm, having the door closed can save your life.

Get in the habit of closing the door.

Can we always predict a storm?

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Having a well sealed home can save your home from damage.

Sometimes even the Farmer's Almanac can be wrong and miss a storm prediction.

Our high tech equipment, can miss a prediction when it comes to the weather as well.

Maybe your relying on the fact that the so-called "experts" predict a mild winter so your going to pass on getting your roof checked for cracks, or will wait another year before properly insulating your pipes. This could be a costly mistake.

The fact is that being prepared for storm damage will benefit you in the long run.

Having a well sealed home can save your home from  damage.

If you do get storm damage though it's not recommended to try and do the mitigation yourself.

The experts at SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, & Pleasants Counties have the correct tools and equipment to help save your home when it looks like a total loss. We are the remediation experts in the MOV and that's a fact not a predication.

Mid Ohio Valley Smoke and Soot Cleanup

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Mid Ohio Valley Home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Wood, Ritchie, & Pleasants Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
